Publisher's summary

In this gripping portrait of war and its aftermath from bestselling author Lynn Austin, a young woman searches for the truth her childhood friend won’t discuss after returning from World War II, revealing a story of courage, friendship, and faith.

Peggy Serrano couldn’t wait for her best friend to come home from the war. But the Jimmy Barnett who returns is much different from the Jimmy who left, changed so drastically by his experience as a medic in Europe that he can barely function. When he attempts the unthinkable, his parents check him into the VA hospital. Peggy determines to help the Barnetts unravel what might have happened to send their son over the edge. She starts by contacting Jimmy’s war buddies, trying to identify the mysterious woman in the photo they find in Jimmy’s belongings.

Seven years earlier, sensing the rising tide against her people, Gisela Wolff and her family flee Germany aboard the passenger ship St. Louis, bound for Havana, Cuba. Gisela meets Sam Shapiro on board and the two fall quickly in love. But the ship is denied safe harbor and sent back to Europe. Thus begins Gisela’s perilous journey of exile and survival, made possible only by the kindness and courage of a series of strangers she meets along the way, including one man who will change the course of her life.

Absolutely captivating!

Another beautiful story giving us a glimpse into the time of WW2. When devastation and utter heartbreak meet love, hope, and light, a broken heart can begin to mend. Thank you Lynn Austin for another marvelous read! The narrator did a phenomenal job as well!

So good

This is one of Lynn Austin’s best. Sarah Zimmerman is the perfect narrator for this story. As always, Lynn Austin’s attention to historical details shines, but the way she deals with a crisis of faith in the midst of tragedy and horrendous evil is what really stands out. If you’re a Lynn Austin fan you will live thus story. If you’re not, this book will make you one.

Very good! However...

I enjoyed this very much. However, I wish Peggy had more backbone when it came to her father and Donna. There were many opportune times to strongly defend herself but she didn't. Her kindness became weakness, and I hated that haircut.

Couldn’t put it down. Lynn Austin didn’t disappoint as usual!

Wouldn’t have picked a book about the war and what the Jewish people went though but it was of the best books I have read. Lynn Austin has become one of my favorite authors. I don’t think I have read one of her books that I didn’t love!

Wonderful Story

This was such an endearing story. Brought tears to my eyes quite a few times. I thought the narrator was extremely good. I definitely recommend this if you like stories about world war II and what the people had to live through.
