Publisher's summary

Relic, a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child thriller that introduces FBI Special Agent Pendergast

Just days before a massive exhibition opens at the popular New York Museum of Natural History, visitors are being savagely murdered in the museum's dark hallways and secret rooms. Autopsies indicate that the killer cannot be human....

But the museum's directors plan to go ahead with a big bash to celebrate the new exhibition, in spite of the murders.

Museum researcher Margo Green must find out who - or what - is doing the killing. But can she do it in time to stop the massacre?

Prolong the suspense: listen to the sequel, Reliquary.

Critic reviews

"With its close-up view of museum life and politics, plausible scientific background, sharply drawn characters and a plot line that's blissfully free of gratuitous romance, this well-crafted novel offers first-rate thrills and chills." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Wildly cool....Thrill hounds couldn't ask for a creepier environment....a thriller staged in the world's scariest building, with no room for the squeamish." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Came up short in a genre I ordinarily enjoy.

Meh. It was ok. Normally love this genre's that just couldn't get bought into this story line.

Old School Monster Mash

Yea, I get the negative reviews, but I really liked this book. It has an old school, scary, 80’s vibe to it. And, I think it works. It is perfect escapism with a good amount of action and suspense. The narration brings the craziness to life. I also liked the movie which was an excellent version of this book with top notch actors.

This is not a book that you will need to think a lot while reading. It is pure fun. If you like these sort of books, you will enjoy these authors entry in this genre.

Recommended.

f"m Hooked!!!!!!

Where does Relic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

"Relic" (Pendergast series) is definitely high on the list. I would say a close second to the "Gray Man" series.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the introduction of the main protagonist in the book. Pendergast an atypical FBI agent with mysterious past and family background.

What about David Colacci’s performance did you like?

I think he did a pretty good job with personifying Pendergast's New Orleans Southern, but pretentious drawl to even Lieutenant D'Augosta's New York Based accent.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book definitely had it's funny moments. Especially seeing how all these characters from different educational and socioeconomic backgrounds collide.

Not for me.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I thought this book just drug on too long. I enjoy the longer novels, but this was too slow. I finally gave up near the end when I realized there were still over 90 minutes left and I still didn't care how it ended.

Would you recommend Relic to your friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend this one. As previously stated it was slow.

Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoyed David Colacci for the first time and would purchase a book he performed again. I like his strong, smooth voice and his various voices for different characters added some goodness to this book.

Not a Bad Yarn

This story was a cliche' but well done. It kept me listening even though the overall story arc is known to any xfiles or 1950's creature feature fan. This does not mean that it was not a fun romp if you like this type of thing, which I do.

What I really enjoyed was the building of the Pendergast character. You gain insights throughout the story, but he is still quite the mystery, and very interesting.

If I were to judge this on the story alone I would not continue the series, but I am interested in the character Pendergast and will give the next in the series a shot just to see what happens to him.

SOOO much better than the movie

If you have seen the movie the Relic... you are sadly at a disadvantage. In the movie many of the names were changed and some of the characters were combined or omitted. So if you are expecting that... you will be disappointed.

The Narrator David Colacci does a great job, and the story is masterfully told by Preston and Child. Note: if you do not walk away from this a huge fan of Agent Pendergast...

Great Book! Nothing Like the Movie.

This book was a great ride from beginning to end. I purchased this book before realizing that it was a movie I had seen and disliked in the 90's. I was worried I had made a mistake, but I am glad I decided to give it a chance because the book was far superior to the movie. The story never bored me and kept me on my toes at all times. The characters were well developed and interesting. I was so impressed that I immediately purchased the next book in the series.

David Colacci was excellent as a narrator for this book. He was able to get the feel for the characters and had a good handle on different accents etc... I was also impressed that this novel had sound effects. I liked the fact that when people were in large chamber like rooms you heard a bit of an echo when people spoke, also when people were talking on the phone or on hand held radios their voices sounded different due to the sound effects. It made the who experience of listening to the book much more real and made me feel like I was actually there.

I hope that the second book is as good as the first.

Yes, you want to listen to this book.

Here is the short and long of it.
For characters you love to hate, read this book.
For characters you root for from the start, read this book.
For an old fashioned type of horror, read this book.
I listened to this on audible and I have to say I adore the narrator, he made Pendergast and Augusta come alive for me and those who moaned and and and I felt I could strangle them.
For entertainment level alone, this is well worth the read and I will most assuredly be investing in more books written by these authors.
