Publisher's summary

In this long-awaited prequel to his New York Times best-selling series, Jefferson Bass turns the clock back to reveal the Body Farm's creation - and Dr. Bill Brockton's deadly duel with a serial killer.

In the summer of 1992, Arkansas governor Bill Clinton and Tennessee senator Al Gore begin their long-shot campaign to win the White House. On a sweltering hillside in Knoxville, Dr. Bill Brockton, the bright, ambitious young head of the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Department, launches an unusual - some would call it macabre - research facility, unlike any other in existence. Brockton is determined to revolutionize the study of forensics to help law enforcement solve homicides. But the scientist's plans are derailed by a chilling murder that leaves him reeling from a sense of deja vu. Followed by another. And then another: bodies that bear an eerie resemblance to cases from Brockton's past.

The police chalk up the first corpse to coincidence. But as the body count rises, the victims' fatal injuries grow more and more distinctive - a spiral of death that holds dark implications for Brockton himself. If the killer isn't found quickly, the death toll could be staggering. And the list of victims could include Brockton…and everyone he holds dear.

Jefferson Bass at their best

This was far and away my favorite of the series. I purchased this in audiobook and found myself still awake at 4 a.m. because I couldn't turn it off! Kept me on the edge of my seat and, while I could anticipate some of the plot twists, it was still a good book. Highly recommend.

Tom Stechschulte is awesome in his narration.

I really enjoyed this book...except the snake and snake dreams! I always learn something new from the Jefferson Bass books.

Just Amazingly Thrilling!

Wow! I am hooked on Jefferson Bass and will now devour the series, I am certain! This book was really great -- even though we knew who the killer was from very early on. What we didn't know was how the macabre events would play out, and that, believe it or not, made it very, very engaging. The narration is terrific, the characters so relatable, the story line totally a page turner. No fault to be found. Five stars in my book!

Holding on until the end

Well written and just as well read. The narrator does a phenomenal job with timber and inflection to differentiate the characters. This was my first Jefferson Bass story but definitely NOT the last!

Best J/B book so far!

Well-written story, easy listening, and regardless of the horrible murders, a very entertaining book.

Scarfed It Up!

This was one of those that said "yuck" one minute and the next minute saying "don't trust him" and then shutting your eyes and screaming, "NO!" So worth the read or listening! Keep these stories coming!

Good Read

The book was great...the ending was a little far fetched & left me wishing the ending was a little more believable.

Educational as well as entertaining

I thought the choice of narrator was perfect for the book. The story moved at a good pace and the characters are believable. i'm glad this is a series.
