Raine's old boyfriend Andy Fontana is back in town...and at the top of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. With a fortune in diamonds hidden somewhere in the wilderness, several recent acts of eco-terrorism and an unsolved murder laid at Andy's door, the feds turn to Raine Stockton, with her unsurpassed knowledge of the mountains and her reputation as a wilderness tracker, to help bring Andy to justice. The only problem is that Raine still believes Andy is innocent...
With the help of Cisco, her golden retriever, Raine must uncover the truth about the man she once loved and uncover a killer in the process.

Great Books Don't Promote Violence
While I totally enjoyed the canines in Rapid Fire, the "eco-terrorist/old boyfriend plot" just didn't make sense to me. Just as unbelievable was Raine's relationship with Buck, her estranged husband and childhood friend. Donna Ball is brilliant at portraying dogs and people who love dogs but not romantic relationships.
Although I thought Raine (dog trainer), her friends, family and dogs were all interesting & engrossing characters, Raine's estranged husband Buck's character was too inconsistent. Supposedly Buck was a dedicated law enforcement officer with a good heart who cared about people yet repeatedly cheated on Raine. Instead of being justifiably angry with Buck, Raine seemed to think it was her fault that he couldn't keep his zipper shut.
Strangely, Buck acted jealous of Andy, another childhood friend, because Raine dated Andy in college. Really??? Buck doesn't want to be faithful to Raine yet he was still upset about an old boyfriend Raine hasn't seen in about 15 years. Buck and Raine lived in different houses but weren't planning to divorce or trying to save the marriage.
Unfortunately, the men just ruined this book for me.
Delight in the journey and the struggle on the road to your dreams
The second edition of the Raine Stockton dog mysteries dropped a notch from the initial book in my opinion due to to Raine's weird obsession with her college boyfriend turned eco terrorist Andy Fontana whom she hasn't seen in fifteen years. She hides information from her uncle the sheriff; her deputy ex-husband; whom she inexplicably is enraged with for 'allowing' the FBI and Homeland Security to search her house after Fontana had broken into it. In fact she's pissed off at her ex-husband Buck Lawson for pretty much everything that Andy Fontana has done or set into motion.
Back from the initial book in the series are Maude, Sonny, Uncle Ro, and of course the four legged members of the cast Cisco, Mystery, and the two Australian Shepherds. Dexter Franklin also makes another appearance as a villain. This is an excellent follow up mystery despite the aforementioned self perceived weaknesses.
I like the basic idea of this series, love the dog and all the characters... Except the main character/supposed heroine. 1. How can she be upset with her dog when he acts just like her: unruly, rude and dumb. At least the dog is likable. The owner is just rude to the point of mean at times and completely oblivious that she is usually causing more harm than help. Not sure I can carry on in the series.
Love the story the way it was written and the way it was told .The person who told the story gave it a lot of timely emotion. I don't want to be the spoiler so it's a great read!
I have dogs and Donna Ball has great insight into dog behavior as she weaves that through a mystery set in beautiful country. I like it when a book keeps me guessing as well as makes me chuckle.
If you love dogs, you will love these mysteries!
The plot keeps you guessing.
Sonny is probably my favorite character. She is smart and courageous even though she has a life altering disease.
I could not wait to finish and move on to the next book.
AUDIO BEST FOR ME AS IT GOES WITH ME EVERYWHERE.
THE WELL DRAWN PEOPLE AND DOGS, I CAN ALWAYS SEE ONE OF MY PAST DOGS DOING SOME OF THE THINGS THAT OCCUR IN THE STORY.
VERY GOOD AND CLEAR MAKES LISTENING VERY EASY
NOT SURE AS I LIKE TO HEAR STORIES AND SELDOM GO TO MOVIES, BUT I DO LIKE TO SEE MOVIES ON TV THAT WE HAVE LOAD ON SERVER.
KEEP GOOD AUDIO BOOKS COMING.
