Publisher's summary

"Fred Berman brings the team to life. His well-paced delivery allows the story's laugh-out-loud humor to shine, particularly the dry one-liners and wisecracks from Corey and Andy...Berman's narration, along with the fun and engaging mystery, results in a thoroughly enjoyable listen." (AudioFile magazine)

From best-selling mystery author David Rosenfelt comes a new series - a spinoff of the much beloved Andy Carpenter mysteries - about a dynamic new investigative team featuring a determined former cop and his loyal German Shepherd.

Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner, Simon Garfunkel, have recently retired from the police force. Not ready to give up the life yet, they come up with a proposal for fellow former cop, Laurie Carpenter, and her investigating partner, Marcus. Laurie and Marcus - who help out Laurie’s lawyer husband Andy on cases - have been chafing to jump back into investigating on their own, so they are in.

They call themselves the K Team, in honor of Simon. Their first job as private investigators comes to them from Judge Henry Henderson, who's known as a very tough but fair judge, and they've all come up against him in court at one time or another. Though it's hard to believe, Judge Henderson is being blackmailed and extorted, and he doesn't want to involve the police - he needs the K Team to figure out why.

Off to a great start with this new series!

I'm a huge fan of David Rosenfelt, Andy Carpenter, & pretty much in love with Grover Gardner's voice narration. I'm also quite picky about narrator choice, in general. It can make or break a book. But I really think that some reviewers are overreacting about Fred Berman's narration of this spinoff series. I think he gave a good performance. I get it... no one matches Gardner's witty, sarcastic narration, save for Jonathan Marosz (Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series). No one is ever going to do Andy Carpenter better than Gardner! But Berman did a good job here. We don't know where Rosenfelt is going with this series. My guess is that Andy will be a much less prominent character in this series. Andy was likely just used to introduce us to this new series. And a writer isn't an assembly line machine that can crank out product to customer specification. A writer is an artist. Let the man be creative & give it a chance. Sheesh!

Very Good (including the narration)

I really enjoyed this, more than I expected. It's great to get to know these characters from a completely different point of view. I love that it's written from Cory's perspective.

The story itself is well-plotted and involved, but not to the point it loses you. Lots of twists and turns, some you see coming (so you can smugly pat yourself on the back) and lots you don't (so you remember why you like this author).

The narrator is very good. I can't understand why some fans of the Andy Carpenter series (and I'm definitely an Andy/Grover fan too) felt it should be Andy's voice narrating a story from Cory. Andy is a very minor character in this book. I think this narrator was a good choice. A different voice for a different perspective. He's also easy to listen to and understand; a little breathy on a few of the female voices, but not to the point that it's distracting.

I'm looking forward to listening to the whole series.

Performance

I had to slow the pace down of this reader. He read way too fast. He made Andy Carpender out to sound like a jerk. Andy is a funny guy, and he made him unlikable or the Arthur wanted to make him unlikable. Bad move as I am a big fan of your character Andy. That part of the story is confusing.

new offshoot series

this is an offshoot of the Andy Carpenter series. This one centers around Laurie his wife, and a recently retired K-9 team.
It was cute and I enjoyed it. I did not mind the new narrator at all. Having a different one shows it is a different series.

I am looking forward to the next one-- but let's have more dog this time!!

Loved this new series

I hesitated listening to this new series by David Rosenfelt because of the reviews I read about Berman. I'm glad I didn't listen to those people. This series works because Berman gives a totally different personality to his character. I love Grover Gardener's voice as Andy Carpenter. I think the confusion of listening to two totally different characters sounding the same would have been a mistake. I look forward to listening to the rest of this series and can't wait for the next Andy book.

Very good new series

The story was good, but I feel like it would have been great if Grovner Gardner had narrated. The narration completely lacked the snarky, comedic Andy Carpenter style and familiarity of characters. It’s not that Fred Bergman did a bad job. It’s that this book and continuation of characters that we know and love shouldn’t have been given to someone else. Period. Please please please bring in Grovner Gardner for this new series
