Publisher's summary

Caroline Overington's best seller is a heart-breaking, utterly compelling novel of a family ripped apart.

It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was.

She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

The woman walked out to the car park, towards an old Corolla. For a moment, she held the child gently against her breast and, with her eyes closed, she smelled her. She then clipped the infant into the car, got in and drove off.

That is where the footage ends. It isn't where the story ends, however. It's not even where the story starts.

Best listen -- hope the author has other books in the Audible Catalog.

A flawed family struggles with navigating their personal life choices and a social system that sets them up for tragedy. Excellent narration.

just listen

Holy cow. I downloaded this because it was free and had good rating. truth is I stopped multiple times because I just couldn't figure out what it was. that said, I will always always finish a book and, in this case, I am so glad for that. it is a relaxed listen. not slow but soft? it's beautifully written and utterly heartbreaking. the readers bring so much to the characters... this is one of those that will seep into your soul. you can't forget it. just sit back, accept the nuance and quiet, and listen.

A great find

Not sure why I chose this book but it was surprisingly good. It pulled at my hart. I could really feel the characters emotions. Their joy and their pain.

BEAUTY FROM THE ASHES

It was unexpected, but the characters were presented so refreshingly. It’s a story about a family that isn’t very traditional, but they are presented honestly with searing truth. Life isn’t always pretty, but this story of how a family weathered such great storms, learning to come together, will stay with me for a long time.

Full of empathy

Believable characters, infuriating plot, and a happy ending which comes as a relief from all of the sad happenings in the story. Let's hope some of the laws have changed from the outrageous ones detailed in the story.

Definite tear jerker!

I’ve never written a review but as a woman struggling with infertility this book was heartbreaking. It was an amazing book don’t misunderstand! Definitely enjoyed it but the number of times tears filled my eyes is a record for an audio book! 🥹

Push through the first 30 minutes!

The beginning can be a bit annoying As he listen to the main character articulate what he wrote into a letter. The overall story is fantastic
