Publisher's summary

The devastating truth about the effects of wheat, sugar, and carbs on the brain, with a 30-day plan to achieve optimum health.

Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that's been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age.

He offers an in-depth look at how we can take control of our "smart genes" through specific dietary choices and lifestyle habits, demonstrating how to remedy our most feared maladies without drugs. With a revolutionary 30-day plan, Grain Brain teaches us how we can reprogram our genetic destiny for the better.

Please note that there are many references in this audiobook to information discussed in Chapter 10. Chapter 10 has been recorded in its entirety on this audiobook and all information contained in this chapter can be listened to in the recording.

Great book to start with

The information is clear, easy to consume and helpful.

The study on some subjects, at the moment of reading this aren’t that conclusive or deep, but all in all, a great book.

Stuffy narrator

This narrators voice grated on my nerves the entire time. He sounds so snooty, robotic… fake? Ugh.

Luckily I was able to soldier on and I’m so happy I did! What an amazing book. I learned so much!

a real eye opener.

I was a heavy carb eater. I ate very little meat, thinking it was bad for me. the problem was that I was experiencing inflammation and I didn't know why. I wasn't overweight, I'm in pretty good physical condition. so one day I got a gout breakout. I was in so much pain I had to get to the bottom of it. I did a deep dive on research and found that gout is really caused by sugar and inflammation more than high purine foods. We create our own levels of uric acid but its triggered by inflammation which is mostly caused by sugar and vegetable oils. Both highly inflammatory. as soon as I changed my diet my gout went away. It was literally the next day. Read this book if you care about your health and vitality.

Wow, just incredible!

Wow, this book was just incredible. The science and research behind the impact of diet and nutrition, in particular gluten upon the brain and health is groundbreaking. Listening to this has been an absolute breakthrough for me in my understanding of the link between gluten and a person's brain health as well as their overall well-being. I'm looking forward to implementing these principles in every facet of my life.

The holy grail of grain research

If you could sum up Grain Brain in three words, what would they be?

Eat No Grain.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Grain Brain?

some of the research surrounding grains affect on the body outside of weight gain.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator is the main reason I have not given this book 5 star. I REALLY enjoyed the data and book, but had to deal with the narrators professional, yet fake sound. I believe this narrator is the same person who read 'the four hour work week' by Timothy Ferriss. I find the narrator to sound cheesy and hollow. The sound he reflects when using overly optimistic words breeds disdain. I managed to get by the four hour work week despite the narrator and was able to do so with this book as well.Sadly, I heard Dr. Perlmutter speak on a podcast and found him wildly more entertaining than the narrator of this book. It's a shame he did not read the book himself.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes - 7 days grain free, lost 3 lbs. I already work out and ate 'healthy grains'. For me to lose 3 lbs is huge @ 165 lbs. Bloated feeling is 100% gone. Feel great.

Any additional comments?

I don't like the use of quoting 'initial findings'. All sources should be peer reviewed and validated prior to using to establish an opinion.

Interesting information but some out of date

Dr Perlmutter makes a compelling case but I believe his emphasis on gluten detracts from his overall message. Ongoing medical evidence shows that actually a plant based diet is far superior in all health outcomes from those with meat and dairy.
