Who am I?

I've forgotten the answer to that question long ago. Ever since I ran from that house, so desperate to escape, I left with only the clothes on my back and socks on my feet. After that day, I've only ever walked in stolen shoes.

Could I be a girl who is searching for the meaning of life in faceless men? They were all so forgettable. Until he came along. He took me under a waterfall and made me forget my name, and in return, I took his instead.

Enzo Vitale.

An enigmatic man who will only ever love the deep sea. Or rather the predators that inhabit it. Turns out, he's not so different than the monsters he feeds. He lured me onto his boat like a fish in the ocean, seeking vengeance for my crime. Had I realized his intentions, and that a massive storm would leave us shipwrecked, I would've run.

Now, I'm a girl who's seeking refuge in a decrepit lighthouse with a man who loathes me almost as much as he craves me. He wants to hurt me, but the old caretaker of the abandoned island may have intentions far more sinister.

It's no longer a question of who I am, but rather, will I survive?

Great story and PERFECT NARRATION!

4.5 ⭐️ 4.5 🌶️

I love enemies to lovers and this was such a fun take on the trope. Enzo Vitale is one sexy beast and the fact that he speaks Italian AND swims with sharks really just takes him to the next level. I really like Sawyer’s character as well. She is relatable and likable even though there are things she’s done that are definitely not great. She’s also hilarious!

There is one particular scene in this book that I’d heard about ever since this book came out, and it didn’t disappoint — it was unforgettable! The chemistry between these two is absolute fire as strangers, as enemies, and as lovers!

The story also contained some creepy and mysterious elements and definitely some darker aspects as you would expect from HD Carlton. Overall it’s definitely a lighter read than the Cat + Mouse duet but still has a dark vibe with a protective MMC. Definitely check the trigger warnings before diving in.

Troy Duran and Michelle Sparks absolutely crushed it as the narrators — and this was extra amazing because it was duet narration. Michelle was perfect as Sawyer and made me laugh frequently. I’ve listened to Troy MANY times and he has the bestttt voice. He nailed Enzo’s slightly accented voice and holy wow the Italian… 🤤🫠 The narration was perfection! If you are going to check this out for the first time or want to do a reread, I highly recommend the audiobook!

Great narration, odd story

I have seen H.D. Carlton all over my social media and have been curious about her books. When I had the chance to listen to Does it Hurt? I was excited to see what kind of dark romance I was going to get.

Does it Hurt started out strong and had me captivated. A woman is on the run and flees from the airport after someone notices her. Who is Sawyer and What is she running from?

Next thing we know, Sawyer is in Australia where she meets Enzo at a bar and they have such a great time and unforgettable sex that she steals his credit information in order for her to continue to live. This is what she's done in order to survive and she will continue to do it. But Enzo has other plans when he finds out. He will find her and make her pay, in his own way.

But the story doesn't end there. Imagine being on a boat and you shipwreck in the middle of nowhere. You are now stuck with the man you stole from and a creepy old lighthouse caretaker that locks you in a bedroom at night. This is where things take a turn for the dark and twisted.

Does it Hurt was definitely dark, and Enzo made Sawyer pay in his own deliciously dark ways, but there was not much of a connection between the two of them besides the physical. As I listened to the duet narration of Troy Duran as Enzo and Michelle Sparks as Sawyer, I felt like I really got to be immersed into the story. The accents and the feelings they got across from their performances was the highlight. But I still didn't connect with the characters as much as I wanted to. The messed up part? I kind of enjoyed the twisted, messed up story of the lighthouse caretaker more than the "romance".

Overall, I enjoyed Does It Hurt? but wanted something more. More connection between the main characters and a few ends wrapped up better. But the duet narration was superb!

Wonderful narration!

Wonderful narration! Wild story! This held my attention and kept me guessing! It definitely fit the dark romance description but I’m not sure this genre is for me. However, this was well written and fast paced!

I liked it. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈

I really liked this book. It was just a tiny bit slow for ME at first but it picked up and never let go. It is set in Australia, a country I’d love to visit. Expertly narrated by the Uber talented Troy Duran and Michelle Sparks this is a clear winner in MY book. Five Sharks 🦈 (in place of Stars) on this one!

I NEVER BOUGHT SOMETHING SO FAST

This book was AMAZING. I am loving everything HD Carlton has been dishing out to us. The narrator for the FMC is the same as Haunting/Hunting Adeline and I LOVE HER. Though saddened that there was no Teddy for the MMC... I was just as happy with the MMC Narrator!
If you are wanting a fun Enemies to Lovers, Touch Her and Die, thriller, stand-alone, THIS IS IT! I am super happy about this purchase. I cannot wait to see what else HD has to offer next! She quickly became a favorite Author with her Cat and Mouse Duet, and this book has just cemented her place in my TOP 3 Favorites!

Hurts So Good!

HD Carlton just has a way of writing a beautiful dark romance. As you read you think, how is this possible that my heart beats for this person who can be so cruel and twisted but it does and you want nothing but the absolute best for them. I read this book previously and was still in love with the story while listening. The story is so fluid and twisty and provides you with a desire for retribution for the true villains of the sorry, of which HD writes with true twisted evil. When I first read this book I had Troy and Michelle’s voices in my head, so when I found out they were the actual narrators I did such a happy dance! They of course BLEW IT OUT OF THE WATER!! Troy did at least 4 different accents in this book with a heavy concentration on Italian and I couldn’t imagine anyone else perfecting this as he is able to. He seems so fluent in the language that you get lost in the beauty of it even though you don’t know what the true words mean (in the physical copy of the book there is a translation to all the Italian especially chpt 26) Michelle is a goddess as usual and portrays her characters like no one else can either. Her range of emotion always encompasses her work and just brings you into the story making you feel everything. I’m just so happy with how this came out and in awe of the the immense talents of these 2. Can’t recommend enough!!!!
