Publisher's summary

Following the epic, ambitious, instant New York Times bestseller City on Fire, “The Godfather for our generation” (Adrian McKinty), comes the dramatic second novel in an epic crime trilogy from Don Winslow, #1 internationally bestselling author of the Cartel trilogy (The Power of the Dog, The Cartel and The Border).

Hollywood.

The city where dreams are made.

On the losing side of a bloody East Coast crime war, Danny Ryan is now on the run. The Mafia, the cops, the FBI all want him dead or in prison. With his little boy, his elderly father and the tattered remnants of his loyal crew of soldiers, he makes the classic American migration to California to start a new life.

A quiet, peaceful existence.

But the Feds track him down and want Danny do them a favor that could make him a fortune or kill him.

And when Hollywood starts shooting a film based on his former life, Danny demands a piece of the action and begins to rebuild his criminal empire.

Then he falls in love.

With a beautiful movie star who has a dark past of her own.

As their worlds collide in an explosion that could destroy them both, Danny Ryan has to fight for his life in a city where dreams are born.

Or where they go to die.

From the shores of Rhode Island to the deserts of California where bodies disappear, from the power corridors of Washington where the real criminals operate to the fabled movie studios of Hollywood where the real money is made, City of Dreams is a sweeping saga of family, love, revenge, survival and the fierce reality behind the dream.

Listen then listen again

First, hear City on Fire. Then listen to this gem. Rinse and repeat. They’re both better two or three times around.

Brilliant work…

Winslow reveals humanity within the monster. This is a really fast read. The narration is superb. There’s a hope of redemption, only to be reminded the inhabitants sold their souls in the beginning.

Nevertheless Danny Ryan is a tragic hero, one worth getting to know. If you like mafia tales, this is one one for the ages.

The first Don Winslow book that wasn’t phenomenal…

Winslow has become my favorite author. Power of the Dog, The Cartel, California Fire and Life, The Dawn Patrol. I await the next Winslow novel like a kid waiting for Xmas.
I’ve NEVER not been blown away and crushed every time they ended by a Don Winslow novel, until now.
This is the sequel to another book which was great as always. When I heard this was coming I was ecstatic! Just like I always am when a new DW book is coming to audible.

I couldn’t believe it.
When this book was ended I was indeed blown away! But not bcuz of how amazing it was, but that it could possibly be over already!

It just didn’t have that DW greatness. The story was kinda boring and the ending was meh…
Don’t get me wrong now! This book is still better than 75% of what’s available on audible! But when compared to other DW novels I feel it falls short.
I’m disappointed as a fan but if this was my first DW novel I would still definitely be looking for more of his work, that’s a given!

If you are a Winslow fan, u may be let down a bit, maybe not, Idk.
If you have never read Winslow before I suggest reading Power Of The Dog (Mob/Cartel stuff) OR The Dawn Patrol (surfer true crime) depending on what u like. Certainly reading the first one in this series first, assuming that’s not why I are here…

Not boring, a great continuation

I was late to becoming a reader/listener of Winslow, but he's now three for three for me. This book has a propulsive plot, flawed antiheroes, and a few twists and turns that kept things moving along. Narrator was outstanding. I look forward to how this trilogy will end.

Loved This Noir Book

Winslow’s writing is always gritty and this book is classic Winslow. It’s heartbreaking, haunting, and sometimes hopeful. The narrator was perfect.
