Publisher's summary

Winning by not competing! This international best seller upends traditional thinking with principles and tools to make the competition irrelevant.

In an audiobook that challenges everything you thought you knew, W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne assert that tomorrow's leading companies will succeed, not by battling their rivals for market share in the bloody "red ocean" of a shrinking profit pool, but by creating "blue oceans" of untapped new market spaces ripe for growth.

Based on a study of 150 strategic moves, spanning more than 100 years and 30 industries, they provide a systematic approach that every company can use to render rivals obsolete and unleash new demand:

  • Reconstruct market boundaries
  • Focus on the big picture
  • Reach beyond existing demand
  • Get the strategic sequence right
  • Overcome organizational hurdles
  • Build execution into strategy

    useful and involving

Highly recommended, non only in the first part dealing with the formulation of a BOS, but also in the second part, which deals with the execution of a disruptive strategy

    Food for thought

If your job is strategy then there is plenty food for thought here. Don't look for any earth shattering revelations or silver bullet solutions. There are, however, plenty of ideas to get you thinking.

    Not that bad

The narration is not too bad I don't think it is a major issue (depends). However the lack of pictorial diagrams that the audiobook refers to made me go and buy the book.... I liked the examples used in the book though.

    Excellent concepts; ignore dated examples

While it is arresting, in 2021, to hear a book tout the superior business models of Barnes & Noble and Borders, or refer to NTT DoCoMo as “the only company making money from the mobile internet,” don’t let that distract from the timeless principles in this book. The concept of value innovation is priceless, and the deep discussion of engagement in Chapter 8 was the best I have found anywhere.

The audio suffers a little, IMHO, from the somewhat cold and remote reading of the narrator. His voice is reminiscent of the character of The Architect from “The Matrix Reloaded”.

    Half useful

Really good at giving examples, but when it gets towards the second half of the book, it tends to be geared towards a big company trying to enter a blue ocean.
