Publisher's summary

A paranormal women's fiction novel for anyone who thought adventure and magic stopped at 40. Guess again, it's just the beginning.

I never expected I'd be one of those people who had a midlife crisis. Sure, I'm over 40 and married, but my kids are grown and moved out. Life is steady, if predictably boring.

That all changes when my husband asks for a divorce and my whole world crashes. Everything I thought I knew, everything I am, gone in an instant. But I am not about to give up. After all, at my age, technically, I'm only halfway there.

I am ready to tackle my do-over; my chance to become the me I've always dreamed of. Starting with moving into my late grandma's cottage and adopting a new kitten.

However, my new life is a little odder than expected. Old books suddenly appearing in my house. Neighbors going missing. A supposed lake monster and a strange man who likes to skulk around with an axe.

I'm going to need to lean on my friends, new and old, to help me navigate my midlife crisis. Together maybe we will find a way to beat the family curse ruining my second chance at life.

Contains mature themes.

Nothing happened

Struggled to finish. Over all could sum up the story in two min and really nothing happened!!! All she did was whine about everything. blah!!! The narrator was good but she could not save the book.

Disappointing ending.

After a big build up of expectation that magic would play a role in this character’s development, nothing happens. Hints at a second book but I feel little curiosity for what might happen next.

Interesting twist on familiar story

I really liked the characters and the story idea. I felt the plot was a little weak but I’m still hooked and looking forward to the next book! Nicole Poole delivers a stunning performance as always and truly makes the story worthwhile!

Midlife magic fun

Either Midway or halfway as you choose to look at it...this is a fun listen. Nicole Poole as always is fabulous. The story is a bit slow at the start but then it gets more interesting. Clearly a series. Lots of mysteries to unwrap. I love that adult children come into the story. Also I’m glad to see a character in the story is LGBTQ friendly. Definitely will read/listen to other books in series.

Slow start but worth the listen

I’m so glad I pushed through the start. A good few giggles and enough suspense that I could not stop listening. Nicole Pool did a brilliant job narrating

Intelligent

More intelligent than most books in genre. Also, about more mature adults. Not a rehash plot.

Very Unsure

First a public service announcement. Never try to kill yourself by sticking your head in a gas oven, unless you want to take your neighbors and anyone entering the house with you. Unless you're found right away, your heirs won't have to worry about burial costs. Messy, very messy.

Second, why do all these mid-life books have to have incredibly mean SOBs as husbands? It gets to be too much. I will say that the author has either researched well or had life experience re abuse, since she drops some true information about effects and treatment into the story mix.

Third, I'm ambivalent about the narrator. Her words are always running full tilt. I'm not sure if that detracts from the story or adds verisimilitude to the narrator's state of mind.

Fourth, I don't know why I'm reading all these suddenly appearing mid-life novels. I'm nearer to the end of life and know that a character entering her forties is facing her best years. She's even starting to peak sexually. Just saying.

Fifth, why didn't I know this was a cliff hanger? I don't buy cliff hangers. If I were to pursue this series, I'll definitely wait until it ends and probably buy the last book. This is not to say it's boring. It starts out very boring then becomes interesting. However, I don't like cliff hangers.

Not your ordinary paranormal mystery

Eve Langlais has crafted a fun and exciting first installment that is not your ordinary paranormal mystery. The main character is one you root for hoping she’ll succeed. I highly recommend this book/audiobook to paranormal mystery fans,

Naomi was dealt a bad hand but she is just to much of a scatter brain for me.

The main character is a nice person who was dealt a lot of crap-tastic things in her life but instead of building her up, she has let it break her down. Her level of anxiety is too much. Also, I have a issue with the flow of the story. There are too many contradictions. For instance at one point Naomi ask’s what happened to the old mill and a character says that it shut down 10 years ago or so. However, later on in the book Naomi who hasn’t been to the town in 20 years says the last time she was at the mill was right after it shut down. If she was there after it shut down and that was 20 years ago, why would she ask someone what happened and they say 10 years ago it shut down. It is a petty thing but there is more than one of those little quirks in the book. The story isn’t bad, it’s very slow in the beginning and gets a little better but all in all there is no real spunk or suspense and it is hard to relate to Naomi when she is so over the top about everything.

I really liked this story. A little magic, a little mystery and some really good comedy.
