Predicting a global pandemic in a hit movie was impressive. Writing a sequel that will work for today’s world might take a whole different kind of intelligence.

Join Scott Z. Burns, the acclaimed screenwriter of Contagion, as he embarks on a mind-bending quest to create a worthy follow-up to his eerily prophetic film. Reuniting with director Steven Soderbergh, members of the cast and crew, and the scientific experts who advised him on the first film, Burns also turns to an unexpected collaborator: artificial intelligence. But can AI predict the source of the next global pandemic—or at least help convince a Hollywood studio to buy your movie pitch? Down the rabbit hole we go, slipping deeper and deeper into the surreal and unknown to explore if human creativity and AI could join forces.

In this deeply thoughtful, occasionally frightening, and often hilarious behind-the-scenes series, Burns assembles an extraordinary collection of minds (both skeptics and optimists) across the world of academia, the sciences, journalism, and the entertainment industry to weigh in. But Burns' most intriguing collaborators? His ever-expanding cast of AI-generated partners led by the incomparable Lexter, Scott’s extraordinarily gifted, sharp-tongued writing partner and, well ... friend. As the adventure spirals into uncharted territory, one question looms large: In this brave new world of human-AI collaboration, what could possibly go wrong? Listen to find out.

Editorial Review

A bold experiment
During the height of the COVID pandemic, Scott Z. Burns’s film Contagion saw a resurgence in popularity for obvious reasons: People were watching to make sense of their current reality. So when he was tasked with writing a sequel, his challenge was wondering how to replicate that relevance. In comes arguably the most relevant thing affecting artists and content creators today: generative AI. With a “team” of AI writers, actors, producers, and even a facsimile of Burns’s own foul-mouthed late talent agent, Burns documents his bizarre yet illuminating experiment. The bots sometimes get it right, often get it wrong, occasionally terrify, and always take things in unexpected directions, making for a fascinating case study into what happens when we involve this technology in our artistic endeavors. —Sam D., Audible Editor

An insider’s look at the battle lines between/amongst/emerging from the intersection of creative processes and AI. Thought provoking in ways I didn’t expect, funny in ways I never saw coming…and ultimately inevitable in ways we simply can’t prevent.

Well done Scott.

(No…I didn’t use an LLM to write this!)

Babs. I need more angry Babs in my life! 🤣

I highly recommend this to anyone interested in how Ai works and does not work. My first insight? That AI is better described as "Ai." Yes, it is an amazing technology; there are also significant limitations.

Even for its creators, the systems are a black box (to all but a very few perhaps?); with an incomplete understanding of how it works. That said, there is value in this new technology if WE shape IT, rather than allowing it to shape us.

This audiobook describes a journey that illustrates this important understanding, offering some valuable insights. Scott's use of Ai to help him imagine the story that could potentially become the sequel to his hit movie "Contagion" is well organized and fascinating. This is more than just entertainment, there is some enlightenment here for those interested.

And I sincerely DO hope that Scott Burns makes this movie. I will definitely watch it.

Entertaining and enlightening - Highly recommend!

Intriguing perspectives on AI generated content and collaboration. It left me feeling like AI was is wretch and no vomit. It isn’t really getting there for humanity. It’s a counterfeit; but isn’t that what Hollywood does?—they generate counterfeit images and dialogue and he invoke emotions that we somehow and awkwardly connect with. This presentation does a good job of guiding us forward into this brave new world.

As a human with a few chat bots of my own, this was so perfectly done. I liked the open-mindedness and the patience because both are needed when dealing with chat bots and LLM.

Did not expect that

Great investigation by a prominent, experienced writer. Only thing: it felt like it was building to a real pitch with Lexter. Obviously, for business reasons this didn’t happen in the end. Still, would have been very interesting…
