As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

These pages represent two chapters of my recently updated book, The REAL Purpose-Driven Life plus an additional chapter on good versus evil. I removed the afore-mentioned chapters because I wanted to focus, in that book, on the central moral concept known as purpose. These chapters, although central to an understanding of the morality of Ayn Rand, stand on their own and provide several important insights on how to think about morality and apply it to the life of the individual.

Today we are told to be true to ourselves, look within for answers, and follow our hearts. But when we put our own happiness first, we experience record-breaking levels of aimlessness, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Self-centeredness always fails to deliver the fulfillment we're seeking.

Why did I write this book, and why did I call it EGOnomics? I believe you need to defend your ego against countless efforts to diminish it. Anti-ego ideologies often equivocate between egoism and narcissism and treat both concepts as if they were the same.
