Published first in 1912, Psychology of the Unconscious was one of the most important stepping stones in the development of Jung’s thought and practice. It has a long subtitle: A Study of the Transformations and Symbolisms of the Libido. A Contribution to the History of the Evolution of Thought. This expressed the underlying impetus - a break from the view of the libido and its functions as taught by Sigmund Freud, which Jung had earlier adopted. It was from this point that the two approaches, which came to be known as the Swiss and Viennese schools, emerged.

I have always believed dreams are not random flickers of imagination, but coded messages from the deepest layers of the mind. With a master’s degree in psychology and years of personal fascination with the unconscious, I found myself inevitably drawn to Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams. Freud suggested that dreams are the “royal road to the unconscious,” and I have come to believe this road runs straight through memory, guilt, desire, and loss. The dreams in this book are all my own—revisited, expanded into narrative, and interpreted through an unashamedly Freudian ...

In 1896, Sigmund Freud presented his revolutionary “seduction theory,” arguing that childhood sexual abuse directly caused adult mental illness. Just nine years later, he completely reversed this stance, insisting these traumatic memories were mere fantasies. Why did Freud retract his original theory? And why has the psychoanalytic community gone to such lengths to conceal this critical reversal?
