Lewis Carroll followed up his classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with the equally wondrous sequel Through the Looking Glass, a timeless tale that imaginatively blends laughter, mischief, and magic. The story begins on a cold, snowy day, when Alice must stay inside. She decides to play a game of make-believe, but the game becomes real when Alice steps through a mirror - and into another world! Desperate to return to her real life, Alice faces a series of bizarre adventures and unforgettable characters.

The book portrays a parallel, mirrored world where Alice enters through a mirror and find all the fascinating lives of people living a completely opposite life to what Alice’s world had. Here, backward is forward, people know about the future, and the past is a mystery and logic is a complete opposite. Alice gets to meet Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, sings along to all the rhymes (including the nonsense rhymes of the Jabberwocky), and lives as a pawn in a living game of chess. She has to become a chess queen in order to get back home, and for that, she must play!

This is the story of Alice's second visit to Wonderland, where again every idea Alice has of logic and reason is logically and rationally challenged by her adventures. From the classic Red Queen, with her manic racing to enable her to stay exactly where she is, to the highly meaningful nonsense of the Jabberwocky, Alice's trip through the looking glass has provided us with a host of now familiar but no less teasing puzzles which somehow manage to give us a whole new reflection on 'normal' life.

Alice sees the other side of the Looking Glass, and enters another world of whimsical enchantment. She encounters argumentative chessmen, Jabberwocky monsters, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and some very insolent flowers. Carroll continues the development of his Wonderland in this second, and many feel richer, adventure of Alice.

This 1872 sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland finds Carroll's inquisitive heroine in a fantastic land where everything is reversed. Whereas the first book has the deck of cards as a theme, this book is loosely based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for squares. Alice encounters talking flowers, madcap kings and queens, and strange mythological characters when she becomes a pawn in a bizarre chess game.

When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story.

During the trip, Lewis Carroll told the three young daughters of his friend a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and one of them, Alice Liddell, asked Dodgson to write it down for her. On 26 November 1864, he gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of "Alice's Adventures Under Ground".
