Larry was invited by the Navy Labor Board to work in Hawaii, while he took time off from Ohio State University, to earn the finances needed for his junior year. On his first Sunday morning in Oahu, he planned to meet with his brother, who was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Waiting there at the Navy Yard, Dry Dock No. 1, taking in the sights of the harbor and the USS Pennsylvania, the scene changed astonishingly as Pearl Harbor was brutally attacked before his own eyes.

Stoneboats and Piglets provides a real-life glimpse into rural America during the 1920s and '30s through the eyes of a "young feller" named Larry, born on his parents' North Dakota homestead in 1922. While the story swirls throughout the prosperity of the '20s into the Depression of the '30s, Larry's memories shed light on the character and determination of his family and neighbors as they adapted and endured through this unique period of history before America's entry into World War II.
