"A Witch Shall Be Born" is one of the original novels by Robert E. Howard about Conan the Cimmerian (a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian). The story concerns a witch replacing her twin sister as queen of a city state, which brings her into conflict with Conan who had been the captain of the queen's guard. Themes of paranoia, and the duality of the twin sisters are paramount in this story but it also includes elements of the conflict between barbarism and civilization that is common to the entire Conan series.

"One Basket" is a collection of numerous short stories by author Edna Ferber, published in 1947. All of them share the author's wonderful way with prose and tone, and most of them are about very ordinary men and women, living their daily lives... Especially the women, their hopes, fears, strength and weakness are brought to loving life by the author!

"The Road to Oz: In Which Is Related How Dorothy Gale of Kansas, The Shaggy Man, Button Bright, and Poly-chrome the Rainbow's Daughter Met on an Enchanted Road and Followed it All the Way to the Marvelous Land of Oz" is the fifth of L. Frank Baum's "Oz" books, published in 1909. As the long, complete title of the work says quite a bit about the wonderful proceedings in this work, there is no need for more than for the listener to just jump into it all and enjoy.

"Omnilingual" is an unusual sci-fi story as it focuses on archaeology on an alien culture. An expedition from Earth to Mars discovers a deserted city, the remains of an advanced civilization that died out 50,000 years before. The human scientists recover books and documents left behind, and are puzzled by their contents. Earnest young archeologist Martha Dane deciphers a few words, but the real breakthrough comes when the team explores what appears to have been a university in which the last few civilized Martians made their last stand...

"Naudsonce" is a science fiction classic about the first contact between humans and non-humans. Here, it's not really violence or weapons that will decide things - its communication, plain and not so simple! The work is written by H. Beam Piper, published in 1962.

The Defenders is a 1953 science fiction novel by American master of the genre Philip K. Dick, and the basis for Dick's 1964 novel "The Penultimate Truth". (It is one of several of his stories to be expanded into a novel)... Eight years ago a nuclear war began between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. American survivors evacuated to gigantic bunkers miles under ground. Sophisticated, radioactivity-immune robots called "leadys" continue fighting the war on the devastated surface.

"The Vortex Blaster" is a collection of three science fiction short stories by author E. E. Smith, published in 1960. The stories included are "The Vortex Blaster", "Storm Cloud on Deka" und "The Vortex Blaster Makes War", and they all bear the stamp of unmistakable quality to be expected from the old sci-fi specialist Smith! The hero of the collection is Neal "Storm" Cloud, a nuclear engineer with an amazingly mathematical mind.

"The Knights of Arthur" by Frederik Pohl, published in 1958, is a humorous sci-fi tale. The sum total population of the entire U.S. is now less than 10,000(!) as the listener is taken on a wildly funny ride, an Arthurian quest, actually; but of a very eccentric nature indeed, as Arthur is an entity with very strong and particular opinions... without body and limbs, by the way.

"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is a Sherlock Holmes story. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle believed this was his best Holmes story. Plot: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rise unusually early one morning to meet a young woman named Helen Stoner. Helen fears that her life is being threatened. Helen's twin sister had died almost two years earlier, shortly before she was also to be married. Helen had heard her sister's dying words, "The speckled band!" but was unable to decode their meaning.

"Anthem" is a fascinating dystopian sci-fi novella by Ayn Rand, published in 1938. It takes place at some unspecified future date when mankind has entered another dark age. Technological advancement is now carefully planned and the concept of individuality has been eliminated... Equality 7-2521, our hero, realizes the importance of his own existence only when he comes to know and feel that one is the centre of one's universe, and that one's own perception gives the world and one's life its meaning.

"The Golden Goose Book" is a wonderful classic of children's fairy tales by L. Leslie Brooke, first published in 1905. In there, one scientist discovers that the teenager is the first human capable of causing others to be accident-prone, but that this is only possible in cases of crisis. The scientist sends our hero Dolliver Wims straight to War... recipe for hilarious disaster?

"The Call of the Wild" is a short adventure novel by Jack London published in 1903 and set in Yukon, Canada during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush when strong sled dogs were in high demand.

The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively feral in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive.
