Story
H. P. Lovecraft was not a very popular writer during his lifetime but achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Today he is widely acknowledged as one of the most significant 20th century authors in the genre of horror and the supernatureal. The title of this story came from an actual house in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft's hometown. It was built around 1763 and still stands on Benefit Street. The story is a masterpiece of supernatural horror and was descripted by Robert Weinberg as "one of Lovecraft's best short novels."

Kate explains her story this way, "I am about to give to the world the particulars of a life fraught with incident and adventure. I am about to lift the veil from the most voluptuous scenes. I shall disguise nothing, conceal nothing, but shall relate everything that has happened to me just as it occurred. Story
Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman (October 31, 1852¿March 13, 1930) was a prominent 19th century American author. Up until recently she was known primarily as a "feminist" writer, for her classic stories like "A New England Nun" and "The Revolt of Mother". However, she also wrote many well-crafted supernatural stories which have only recently begun to attract appreciative critical attention. These stories combine pragmatism and supernaturalism and are very much in the tradition of an "Americanized" Gothic.
