Victor-Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 - 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. After his release, Valjean plans to rob monseigneur Myriel, a saint-like bishop, but cancels his plan. Valjean eventually reforms and becomes a successful businessman, benefactor, and mayor of a northern town.

Obligado a llevar pasaporte amarillo que prueba su condición de ex presidiario es rechazado por la sociedad, hasta encontrarse con Monseñor Myriel, que le concede el perdón por haberle robado a cambio de que se comprometa a hacer el bien. Desde entonces Jean Valjean decide dedicar su vida a la filantropía.
