‘We’re building this for 150 years and still going strong’

  • Summary

  • Construction work on HS2 has officially begun, with companies behind the controversial high-speed rail project expecting to create 22,000 jobs in the next few years. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said HS2 would "fire up economic growth and help to rebalance opportunity". Responding to claims that the pandemic has reduced the demand for long distance travel, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Martha Kearney: "We're not building this for what happens over the next couple of years or even the next 10 years.” He added: "We're building this - as with the West Coast and East Coast mainlines - for 150 years and still going strong. So I think the idea that - unless we work out a way of tele-transporting people - that we won't want a system to get people around the country...is wrong." Credit: Getty Images
