  • The American Roommate Experiment by Elena Armas | The Witty Banter Book Club #70
    May 22 2024

Rosie is an engineer in New York City considering a career change that may turn her life upside down. When the ground she’s standing on gets ripped out from beneath her (or rather her apartment’s ceiling, I should say) Rosie finds herself sharing a temporary living situation with her best friend’s cousin, Lucas. Lucas isn’t just Lina’s cousin, he’s a professional surfer with some big life changes in the works. When he meets Rosie, his cousin’s best friend, he decides to help her move past some blocks to the new career she has her sights set on but he may get more than he bargained for. Fake dating, forced proximity, and a myriad of other tropes tossed together in one little literary creation. • Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney | The Witty Banter Book Club #69
    May 15 2024

Frances is a 21 year old college student and poet living in Dublin Ireland. She and her best friend/ ex-girlfriend Bobbi meet Melissa, a photographer and essayist at one of their stand up poetry nights. Melissa invited the girls back to her house where they meet her husband, Nick, slowly integrate themselves into the lives of this married couple. Frances and Bobbi’s relationship becomes fractured as Frances and Nick begin an affair and Melissa and Bobbi become closer. With complex dynamics and page-turning drama, this story explores themes of young adulthood, self-destruction, cycles of abuse, and exploitation Today, we are talking about, Conversations with Friends. THIS WEEKS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Bobbi and Frances have a unique relationship, at the core they are two women in a friendship but they have also dated. What do you think of their relationship? Do you think it is an accurate portrayal of female friendship or do you think it resembles that of ex-lovers?

Is Bobbi’s reaction to Frances story justified or do you think it is an overreaction?

Do you think Melissa’s email to Frances after finding out is a true stream of consciousness or do you believe it was methodically calculated like Frances believes it to have been?

Melissa has cheated on Nick in the past, but Nick has never, to our knowledge, had an affair with someone before Frances. Do you think Melissa’s history of infidelity gives Nick grace for his affair?

Which character do you think you related the most to? Thank you so much for watching this episode! Please support the show by leaving a like and your comments about the episode this week.
