  • EP031: The hounds of Africa w/ Themba & Gogo
    Jun 11 2024

This podcast is recorded live, as the action unfolds, on one of many vast ranches in the mountains of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is completely unscripted and unplanned.

Much like many parts of the USA— farmers in South Africa use trained hounds to help control local predator populations. They do this to reduce predation on their far roaming-livestock and new-born animals. Despite this training, hound success rates tend to be low, but help keep the cats and jackals a safer distance. We learned this from two local hound hunters named Themba and Gogo, who we interviewed spontaneously on the side of a mountain. This is their story.

(Robin and his bow-hunting buddy Callum Methley of @kudu_hunt are asking questions)

A big thank-you again to Themba and Gogo, to Callum for all the guidance (and catering!) and to Fred Hammer for the heads-up that morning.

Don't forget to follow Fred and @kuduhunt on Instagram.

  • EP030: Being a more effective, ethical hunter w/ Dr. Brian Hauck
    Jun 4 2024

Through his 30+ years as a doctor, many months spent chasing animals in the mountains, and more than 17,000 surgeries under his belt. This professional knows not only exactly where to place a projectile, but why.

In this episode Dr. Brian Hauck shares his extensive knowledge, along with a bunch of fantastic stories set in different mountains around the world. There's a couple of diagrams Brian uses to explain best practices and anatomy on my Instagram.

Thanks again Dr. Hauck for all his time and energy!

Brian isn't active on social media, but he plays a big role in the Grand Slam Club Ovis community. All info at the link above.

  • EP029: Ejler's Ocean - tales from the sea
    May 28 2024

The homesteading, veggie growing, fish-slaying artist known as Ejler is back!

Fishing season is just around the corner — not one to hold his cards close to his chest, in this episode Ejler casually throws down a killer-hand of stories and tactics from the ocean. This is hard-earned knowledge from over 40 years spent fishing local waters in a wooden row-boat, designed and constructed by his own fair hand. If you haven’t had the chance to listen to his earlier episodes, then we we highly recommend you circle back and hear the many adventures that made Ejler the man he is today.

A big thanks again to Ejler for being such an open (and entertaining) book!

And thanks to everyone listening. If you want to hear more, then be sure to give The Wild Dispatch a follow/subscribe so you never miss an episode.

If you want to send Ejler a message then the simplest thing to do would be to send me the message on Insta, I’ll call him on his landline and pass it along. Leave a 60s voice message and it might even make its way into a future episode!
