  • Summary

  • A confluence of nine factors has opened new possibilities for teaching and learning in a post-pandemic world. The COVID pandemic drove schools’ rapid buildout of education technology infrastructure worldwide. Millions of educators now have a basic familiarity with education technology. NAEP, the U.S. education report card, confirmed that COVID-driven learning loss is real and significant. There’s a growing consensus that learning recovery is a top priority requiring immediate action. Unprecedented federal and global funding already exists to address learning recovery. Many organizations, governments, non-profits, and for-profits are already mobilizing to tackle learning recovery. There are evidenced-based, innovative solutions on which we can redesign how we do education to accelerate learning. The political will exists to adapt quickly. And the risk of inaction is greater than trying new approaches. This podcast with Dr. Thomas Mennella invites bold thinkers to explore the new teaching challenges and possibilities created by The Perfect Storm.

  • What We All Know About Student Engagement, but Often Overlook, As We Strive to Drive Authentic Learning
    Oct 25 2022

Welcome to the premier episode of The Perfect Storm podcast, where we talk about the exciting possibilities of teaching in a post-COVID world. In this episode, we escape the echo chamber to strike up an unfiltered discussion about student engagement. Dr. Bryan Caplan explores the often unspoken factors that shape students’ interest in our lessons and coursework. He speaks in a refreshingly candid and entertaining way about why students hunt for easy A’s and casually forget most of what they learn after the final exam and, most importantly, what we can do about it.

Bryan Douglas Caplan is an American economist, New York Times best-selling author, and professor of economics at George Mason University. Caplan is also a research fellow at the Mercatus Center, an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute, and a former contributor to the Freakonomics blog and EconLog. Caplan holds a B.A. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.
