  • The Five Heartbeats: I've Got Nothing But Love for You Baby!
    Jun 7 2024

Duck. JT. Eddie Kane (King). Dresser. Choirboy. Big Red. Jimmie. Eleanor. Baby Doll. Brotherhood. Loyalty. Race. Class. Black Arts. The Dells. The Temptations. Positive Black men in film. A classic for the culture. The Five Heartbeats.

In 1991 when Robert Townsend set out to create a film that was an ode to the Black music groups of the 1960's, he had no idea that he was creating a film that would be ingrained in American cinema and adored by all cultures for decades.

The Five Heartbeats is a film that brings together generations. From the repeated one-liners "My office hours are from 9 to 5" to the scenes that we always reenact... this was the perfect way to kick of Black Music Month!

What do you do when the odds are stacked against you and you feel the only way out is to take what belongs to someone else? A movie that gave Black women a different narrative of controlling their destiny and giving themselves a better tomorrow...even if it meant robbing a bank. That is SET IT OFF!
