  • Lucas Cantor on the craft of composition and completing Schuberts Unfinished Symphony with AI
    Feb 5 2022
If you were to try to listen to every piece of music that is currently on Spotify today it would take you 500 years. And if music was being added at the rate that it's being added today, over those 500 years, by the time you would listen to everything 500 years from now, you would have listened to about 1% of what was available.” ~ Lucas Cantor

Lucas Cantor (@lucasdcantor) is an Emmy-winning composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and conductor. In this conversation we talk about Lucas’ collaboration with artificial intelligence to finish Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. We explore his process for working with the AI, and what this means for the intersection of music and technology. Plus we explore the craft of composition, and Lucas’ favourite books from his podcast Book Society.

  • Productivity anxiety, embracing limits, and eternal life with Oliver Burkeman
    Oct 10 2021
Attention, on the other hand, just is life: your experience of being alive consists of nothing other than the sum of everything to which you pay attention. ~ Oliver Burkeman

Oliver (@oliverburkeman) is author of a number of books including, The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking* and Help! How to Become Slightly Happier and Get a Bit More Done.* His new book, Four Thousand Weeks*, is about "making the most of our radically finite lives in a world of impossible demands and relentless distraction".

In our conversation we of course start with productivity, but also dive into everything from ordering Korean food at 2am in NYC, to why being a digital nomad is not all it's cracked up to be. Oliver is not interested in productivity tricks, but rather digs deeper into the underlying psychology and philosophy implicit in our societal and individual obsessions with productivity. This conversation was a lot of fun, and I hope that something resonates with you and helps you to become more mindful if you continue your quest for productivity.

  • Suta Kavari on friendships through politics, deep listening, and reparations for the Namibian genocide
    Jun 28 2021

“Suspend your judgement and immerse yourself in the moment. What does this person have to say? Let go of your biases and immerse yourself in the present moment” ~ S Kavari.

Suta Kavari (@sutaonce) is an economist and director of research at Laurel Strategies where he provides advice to CEOs and other world leaders. But today I am talking to him about friendship across political lines, listening deeply, the role of social media in tribalism, and why the German apology for the Namibian genocide doesn't go far enough. Suta is a wonderful conversationalist, so discussions with him are great fun, and always memorable.
