She told Madison Police Department officers she had fired a shot at the man. Reid, the father of Keeley's child, had a no contact order against him but continued to harass her. Keeley filmed Reid with her phone when he approached her residence, and he left. However, he returned, prompting Keeley to pull out a pistol. Reid told Keeley to use the gun if she had pulled it out, and she fired a single round, later finding a suspected bullet hole near where she fired. Reid fled and was apprehended by officers, resisting arrest and taking a Taser weapon from an officer. Reid faced charges including aggravated stalking, disarming a police officer, terroristic threats, and felony obstruction.   2: Merritt Disbarred lawyer Richard Merritt, known for being a wanted criminal on the run, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his mother, Shirley Merritt, in 2019. A DeKalb County jury found him guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and possessing a weapon during the crime. Prior to the murder, Merritt had been facing a 15-year prison sentence for stealing settlement money from his clients. However, he cut off his ankle monitor and became a fugitive. Merritt's nationwide manhunt ended after eight months when he was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service in Nashville. His murder trial concluded last week.   3: Moore   Travis Moore, a seventh generation Covington resident, has announced his candidacy for the East Ward, Post 2 seat on the Covington City Council. The incumbent, Fleeta Baggett, will not seek re-election. Moore, who lives in the East Ward with his wife and three dogs, has a background in real estate and is involved in various businesses, including a vacation rental company and a fitness center. He previously worked as a firefighter and EMT. Moore's main concern is the ongoing increase in multi-family and large single-family developments in Covington……..Back with more in a moment   Commercial: ESOG- Ingles 7           4: Chattahoochie The Sandy Springs Police Department has announced the transformation of its River Rescue Unit into a River Patrol Unit, resulting in increased police presence on the Chattahoochee River. Starting from Memorial Day weekend, the newly-formed unit will patrol the river between Island Ford and The Palisades, aiming to enforce laws, deter criminal activity, and promote safety in Sandy Springs. The unit, consisting of two sergeants and nine officers, intends to reduce drownings and educate river users on safety practices. Meanwhile, the Sandy Springs Fire Department will continue to operate the River Rescue Unit.. We’ll be right back                    5:  Hotels   The Madison Mayor and City Council have approved two zoning changes to accommodate growing tourism and expand lodging options. Hotels are now permitted in the General Commercial (C3) zoning district, and the height restrictions for hotels in C3 have been raised from 35 feet to 45 feet. The decision was influenced by a proposed hotel project by Fairfield Inn and Suites. The addition of hotels aims to meet regional needs, attract businesses and visitors, stimulate the economy, create jobs, generate tax revenue, and enhance property values. Oliva Restaurant Group is renowned for its popular Atlanta eateries, including Bellina Alimentari, Atrium, Aziza, Falafel Nation, and Rina.   STORY 3:  Proposal ***Audio Defying Gravity*** U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia is co-sponsoring the "HELPER Act of 2023" with Senator Marco Rubio of Florida. This proposed federal legislation aims to make it easier for first responders and teachers to purchase homes in the communities where they work. The act would establish a new Federal Housing Administration home loan program, enabling first-time homebuyers among these professionals to secure a down payment-free mortgage. Ossoff emphasized that mortgage underwriters would still assess the loan's viability. The legislation addresses the challenge of home affordability faced by public servants and seeks to attract and retain talented personnel in essential roles. The program is modeled after a similar initiative for veterans. While the exact cost to taxpayers is not specified, the legislation authorizes specific funding amounts for each fiscal year. The aim is to invest in the future of these professionals and enable them to live in or near the communities they serve. ….. Plaster, one of the early settlers in Buckhead, left behind a will that survived a courthouse fire in 1842, potentially indicating its re-filing. Plaster, a veteran of the War of 1812, received land in the area for his military service. His will bequeathed land, property, and slaves to his wife and children. The child's body was discovered in a pond at an office park on May 11. Police responded to a disturbance call near the King and Queen towers, where they found Calabrese-Lewis in a distressed state. When the child's father arrived and inquired about the baby's whereabouts, the mother stated that the child was deceased in a pool. First responders searched the area and found the girl's body in one of the ponds. The child was taken to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Scottish Rite but was pronounced dead. Calabrese-Lewis is currently held at the Fulton County Jail, facing charges of felony murder and child cruelty.   STORY 2. Dolls   11-year-old Zoe Oli from Sandy Springs is the CEO of Beautiful Curly Me, an Atlanta-based company that offers a diverse line of Black dolls. Her goal is to inspire confidence and empower young girls to embrace their natural curls. Beautiful Curly Me recently ranked third in Barclays US Consumer Bank's "Small Business Big Wins" contest, earning a $20,000 cash prize. The competition received over 14,000 qualifying submissions, and Beautiful Curly Me was selected as a Top 10 finalist. The company features three Black dolls named Bella, Anika, and Leyla, all with names that symbolize beauty. Zoe's entrepreneurial spirit at such a young age is remarkable and showcases her commitment to promoting representation and self-love.   STORY 3:  Law Clinic ***Audio Defying Gravity*** Fulton County Probate Court, in partnership with the Gate City Bar Association, is organizing a free Community Law Clinic to offer residents consultations in criminal and family law as well as probate estate planning. The event will take place at Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta on May 20 from noon until 4 p.m. Legal professionals, including representatives from Probate Court, will be present to provide information on various legal services such as probate estate planning, criminal law, personal injury, family law, foreclosures, bankruptcy, and tenant rights. The individuals have been identified as Jason Salter, 39 years old, and Kenny Guerra, 35 years old. Salter was identified on April 15, while Guerra was identified on May 4. The men were last seen on February 25 and were reported missing to the South Fulton Police Department. The Hapeville Police Department and East Point Police Department also participated in the investigation. The Chattahoochee Hills Police Department requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) after the remains were discovered on a farm on March 11. Last year's fundraiser had over 500 attendees and raised $9,500 for Royal Animal Refuge.   Captured   A woman who escaped from police custody at Piedmont Henry Hospital was captured the same day by the Henry County Sheriff's Office. Quasha Harris, 38, was arrested and charged with escape, and her mother, Antionette Harris, is being detained as a person of interest. Harris was in court facing charges for theft by shoplifting and failure to appear when she was taken into custody and experienced a medical emergency. She was transported to Henry Piedmont Hospital where she escaped from custody. The HCSO conducted an extensive search, which resulted in Harris being captured in Atlanta by the HCSO. Westminster will compete in Class 4A, with Pace Academy, Holy Innocents', and Lovett, while Wesleyan will compete in Class 3A. Meanwhile, Marist, North Atlanta, Riverwood, and St. Pius X will battle it out in Class 6A. The Class A, Division I competition will feature Atlanta International, Mount Vernon, Galloway, and Whitefield Academy. North Springs will be the only representative in Class 5A. Several athletes are expected to contend for state titles, including Grace Smith and Palmer Walstad of Westminster, Caroline Hood of Pace Academy, Kenyah Conner of Woodward Academy, and Lottie Chappell of North Springs.       STORY 2. Mrs Bloodworth   The building on Peachtree Battle Avenue, which was the longtime home of Mrs. Bloodworth's kindergarten, originally served as the sales office for the Peachtree Heights Company that developed Peachtree Heights Park. The structure was designed by the architectural firm Carerre and Hasting, which also designed the New York Public Library, the Standard Oil Building, and the Russell Senate Office Building. Mrs. Bloodworth founded the school in the 1930s, and the school used the lodge for classes. She taught music and arranged plays for the children, and she also walked her students across Peachtree Battle to E. Rivers Elementary School. The two schools were not affiliated, but Mrs. Bloodworth acted as the kindergarten for E. Rivers.         STORY 3:  Sandy ***Audio Defying Gravity*** Sandy Springs will continue its efforts to improve walkability by constructing additional sidewalks, focusing on low-to-moderate income areas between Long Island Drive and The Prado, between Lake Placid Drive and Northwood Drive, and Hope Road. The city has been receiving an annual allocation for community improvement projects since 2017 from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant Program. In February, the city obtained approximately $528,000. The goal is to utilize the funds for multi-year sidewalk projects along Roswell Road and work on Hope Road sidewalks. The projects will improve mobility, pedestrian access to jobs, commercial and retail services, city parks, public transit, and other services. We’ll be right back   Commercial  - ESOG   Commercial - Elon     STORY 4:GDOT   The Georgia Department of Transportation recently awarded 18 projects worth more than $65.2 million, with $15 million going to E.R. Snell Contractor for a bridge construction project on State Route 212 over Lake Jackson in Jasper and Newton counties. Resurfacing projects represent 43% of the total awarded dollars, while bridge construction contracts make up 31%. The remaining funds were allocated to rehabilitation (15%), safety (7%) and bridge rehabilitation (4%) projects. C.W. As a participating local government in the lawsuit, the city will receive settlement funds that "must be used for abatement of the opioid epidemic." The city is already a participant in suits against other distributors, and Sandy Springs has already received funds from McKesson and Purdue. Two more manufacturers, Jensen and Johnson and Johnson, have already reached a settlement agreement. The city will await the disbursement of the settlement funds, then Mayor and Council will determine proper expenditures that will contribute to resolving the city's opioid crisis issues.
