In 2010, Hoffman killed three members of one family, dismembered them, and placed their body parts into hollow trees. It was just a hint of the obsession the unemployed tree trimmer had with trees, leaves and branches. He kept the fourth family member, a 13 year old girl, hostage in his home, on a bed of leaves. When police entered the home, they found the house filled with more than 100 bags of leaves, piles of leaves throughout the house, and dead squirrels in the freezer.
