Self-help feels like a bit of a dumpster fire, doesn't it?

Whether you've binged every self-help book out there or are just getting started in your journey – Go Help Yourself is your source for calling bullsh*t on toxic positivity, turning your existential dread into actual growth, and getting it together without losing your soul (or sense of humor) in the process.

Misty loves self-help and is earnestly trying to improve her life, while Lisa hates anyone telling her what to do. Together, we bring a much-needed critical eye (and healthy dose of humor) to the wildly-unregulated world of self-help, sharing what we learn along the way.

Because we believe that, even though life is hard, personal development doesn’t have to be.

Welcome to your podcast to make life suck less!

  • The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About by Mel Robbins and Sawyer Robbins
    Sep 2 2025

This week on Go Help Yourself, Lisa and Misty are joined by guest host Alisa Manjarrez to review the #1 New York Times Bestseller The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About by Mel Robbins and Sawyer Robbins.

The Let Them Theory is a HUGE book. It promises to "forever change the way you think about relationships, control, and personal power. Whether you want to advance your career, motivate others to change, take creative risks, find deeper connections, build better habits, start a new chapter, or simply create more happiness in your life and relationships, this book gives you the mindset and tools to unlock your full potential." And in this Let Them book review podcast, we cover all the ways we think this book does -- and doesn't -- deliver.

Lisa also shares two articles that discuss some shortcomings of the theory, from The Cut and from Vox.

    About our guest host:

Alisa Manjarrez is passionate about helping people grow into the kind of leaders others want to follow. Guided by her faith, she’s spent her career developing leaders, crafting stories that move people, and creating spaces where multicultural women can thrive.

She’s the Managing Director of Stories Bureau, where she helps brands like Mars Wrigley and Dropbox turn business strategy into clear, compelling narratives. Alisa also co-founded ZERA, a leadership development firm dedicated to creating the change they want to see: multicultural women in positions of power. You can hear her talk more about that on the What Rules!? podcast—where she asks successful multicultural women what rules they broke to outsmart the game and advance their careers.

With a Master’s in Organizational Leadership and experience coaching executives at companies like Google and Bank of America, Alisa brings both heart and strategy to every room she’s in.

You can connect with Alisa on LinkedIn or follow her on Instagram.

  • Welcome to Pawnee: Stories of Friendship, Waffles, and Parks and Recreation with special guest Jim O'Heir
    Jul 16 2025

Get ready for lots of laughs! On this episode of Go Help Yourself, Lisa sits down with Jim O'Heir, best known for his role playing the lovable punching bag Jerry on Parks and Recreation. Jim wrote a book about his experiences on the show, which Lisa read and reviews... all while doing her best to turn it into a self-help book, because she can't help herself. (Get it?) :)

In this Welcome To Pawnee book review podcast, Jim and Lisa share insights about working in the entertainment industry: the highs, the lows, and everything in between. But they mostly laugh and giggle because they are silly and funny and wonderful friends.

If you'd like to learn more about Jim O'Heir, you can follow him on instagram. If you'd like to read Jim's book, you can purchase Welcome to Pawnee here.

I absolutely adore these ladies, they have genuinely helped me manage parts of my life that felt so overwhelming before just by reading and summarizing books! lol they are so funny and detail oriented when it comes to the actual skills and coping mechanisms that are being displayed in the books and even follow through with some of the homework attached to these books and review how helpful it was whilst providing said homework on the podcast!! they have genuinely changed my life and I will continue to recommend these hilarious ladies to anyone who feels they need a lil boost or help in their lives 💕 keep that shit up ladies!!
