  • Solving the Rubik’s Cube of Carbon Markets with Steve Boyle
    Jun 11 2024

Hello Earthlings! For this week’s episode, we’re starting our summer schedule where we’ll be posting a rerun of a relevant episode every other week. We’re starting our summer schedule off with a very timely episode we did with Steve Boyle of Rubicon Carbon back in 2023. Once again, carbon credits are back in the hot seat after The Biden Administration issued recommended guidelines for increased participation and credibility within the credits system. Listen to learn about the complicated puzzle that is the carbon credits industry and how their biggest problems still persist today.

If you follow this industry, you know the ability of companies to purchase carbon credits to offset their emissions can be as complicated as a Rubik’s Cube. Steve walks us through the industry’s reputational challenges, Verra’s carbon credits scandal, and the differences between nature-based solutions and industrial-based solutions. Steve and Lisa Ann also discuss how Rubicon Carbon is changing the industry to make it easier for corporations to verify and trust the carbon offsets they are purchasing.

In Restoring Our Faith in Humanity- we have the privilege of spotlighting journalist Fathi Mohamed Ahmed, who, in 2022, pioneered Somalia's inaugural all-women newsroom, Bilan Media. Despite confronting pervasive prejudice, this remarkable news team fearlessly tackles previously taboo social topics, such as puberty, the female drug epidemic, and the lives of women living with HIV. Fathi and her dedicated news team exemplify extraordinary courage, and we wholeheartedly commend their endeavors.

This is the fourth episode in our series on carbon emissions. To hear more, other episodes in this series are:

    • S1:E3 - Coming Down from the Oil High with Gregor Macdonald
    • S3:E2 - The Fake News Machine of Fossil Fuels with Duncan Meisel
    • S3:E6 - The Perils and Payoffs of Carbon Credits with Sasha Mackler

    Key Points

    • Focus on High-Quality Carbon Offsets: Steve emphasizes the need for high-quality carbon offset standards to ensure genuine and measurable emissions reductions.
    • Challenges and Credibility Issues in the Carbon Market:Steve addresses the challenges in the carbon offset market, including the credibility issues and the need for offsets that wouldn't occur without investment.

  • #60: The Magical Future of Mushrooms
    Jun 5 2024

Greetings In this week’s episode, our away mission takes us underground to explore mushrooms, the most widely distributed organisms on our planet. Without them, life on Earth might not have occurred. Terence McKenna even suggested that mushrooms might have originated in space due to their spores' resilience.

If you listened to our 2022 episode, "The Psychedelic Therapist Will See You Now," you know I'm interested in psychedelics' impact on mental health. Beyond this, mushrooms can slow cancer growth, improve cognitive functions, enhance forest health, and act as an exit drug for fentanyl addiction. Our guest today, Michael Beug, a mycologist and former professor at Evergreen State College, will enlighten us on these magical organisms.

Michael, active in the North American Mycological Association and the Pacific Northwest Key Council, has studied psilocybin since the 70s. We explore fungi's role in ecosystems, their health benefits, and innovative uses, from sustainable materials to dietary enhancements.

Also, restoring our faith in humanity this week is Taryn Foster, a coral scientist and CEO of Coral Maker. Witnessing mass bleaching while researching climate change for her doctoral thesis, she partnered with Autodesk to use AI and automation to create coral skeletons for nursery-grown corals. Coral reefs, vital to 25% of marine species and benefiting a billion people, face catastrophic losses by the 2030s if global temperatures continue to rise. Taryn's work aims to combat this threat.

Join us as we explore the incredible world of mushrooms and their potential to transform our health and our planet. Don’t forget to check out the full interview on our Patreon page!

    Key Topics:

    • The Role of Fungi in Ecosystems: Exploring how fungi contribute to the health and sustainability of various ecosystems, including their symbiotic relationships with plants and trees.
    • Health Benefits of Mushrooms: Discussing the various health benefits of mushrooms, including their antiviral, anti-cancer, and cognitive-enhancing properties.
    • Innovative Uses of Mushrooms: Highlighting the innovative and sustainable uses of mushrooms, such as in packaging, insulation, and as alternatives to conventional materials.
    • Psilocybin and Mental Health: Examining the use of psilocybin mushrooms in mental health treatment, including their potential to treat PTSD, depression, and addiction.
