In a world that celebrates self-confidence, personal strength, and independence, the idea of being "poor in spirit" can seem weak or undesirable. Yet, it is the very posture that Jesus honors and blesses at the beginning of His Sermon on the Mount.
In this message, “The Poor in Spirit,” Pastor Jeffrey Walter explores the meaning of being poor in spirit as the foundation of the spiritual journey. He explains how each Beatitude represents a successive step in the path of spiritual regeneration and how being poor in spirit is necessary in order to embrace God's truth.
Pastor Jeffrey also explains that the Beatitudes reveal two types of poverty in spirit. One that is initial and begins the spiritual journey, and another that emerges along the journey, revealed through temptations, and forms the basis for true righteousness. Lastly, he expounds on practical ways to cultivate poverty of spirit, teaching us not to measure our spiritual growth by shallow truths we casually give up, but by our willingness to surrender deeply held beliefs that contradict God’s Will.
Beloved, as you listen to this message, may you journey with God in giving up all that makes you rich spiritually, that you may inherit His Kingdom. Shalom!
