Bottle feeding is significantly different than breastfeeding. One of the main differences has to do with how the bottle nipple is shaped. For the most part, bottle nipples are longer causing the baby to suck from the back of their mouth rather than the front when they are breastfeeding. Another major difference is that the bottle is not attached to anything meaning that the full weight of it is resting on the baby, usually directly in front of their face rather than off to one side. Both the weight and the unilateral feeding direction can drastically impact how the baby eats and can even impact vision and jaw development.

    Mar 22 2022

In this episode Michelle discusses the difficulties that are sure to arise from the new CDC guidelines regarding milestones. There is hope in all of the confusion and uncertainty that will come from these changes. It is important to remember that guidelines are not meant to be exacting rules. Each child is meant to move from birth and can be helped to do so regardless of the new standard set before them.

Development is not task based but rather whole body based. So many of our measurements in milestones for babies is based on what they can do (hold a bottle, etc.) rather than how they move through their whole body. Much of a baby's body presents as a fluid in its motion and interruptions to this fluid motion can be detrimental to how your baby develops and moves.

There are and should be whole body responses to stimuli.

Eating is such a fundamental part of life, especially for a newborn baby. We have within us an internal drive to find our primary source of food from the moment we are born. Some of us however, struggle to take this first step possibly due to the trauma or intensity of birth or even being born C Section or breach.
Being able to latch on and initiate a strong suck is crucial to our early development. Being able to latch on both sides is also a crucial step in out further milestone development.
