You Slay Me, With Dry Mouth

If you could sum up You Slay Me in three words, what would they be?

Constant swallowing and smacking.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story has from funny parts especially the commentary from Jim the Newfoundland. Great zingers that had me sometimes wondering if my dogs are saying the same thing to me. This series has a lot of potential like the Dark Ones series. It took me 3 months to use a credit to listen to the book, because I was not impressed with the preview snippet. I was bored so I took a gamble with my credit. What I did not like about the book is the background noise. I could actually hear the narrator turning the pages as she was reading!!! The narrator has a smokey voice that sounds like she is smoking three packs a day and the character is in her 30s not her 60s. The worst part is the constant swallowing and smacking. I had to adjust the audio on my phone and radio to get through the book. I will continue to listen to the series, because the story line is interesting and Aisling's sidekicks are funny, but I do hope that the next books have better audios. The smoker's cough voice of Barbara is not too bad. I am getting use to her voice, but the smacking, paper shuffling, and swallowing needs to be addressed pronto.

How could the performance have been better?

The whole audio needs to be redone to eliminate all the swallowing, pages turning and smacking done by the narrator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I cannot see this book being made into a film. There were too many problems with the audio on this one to imagine the story line.

The Three Stooges.

This was a funny book, but you have to keep in mind that the heroine is an idiot and just go with the flow. The side characters Jim and Renee were great and made for some comical relief. The story is a comical paranormal romance with a lot of blundering going on, kinda a reminiscence of Stephanie Plum trying to get fugitives. I wasn't a huge fan of Drake's personality though. I have listened to Barbara Rosenblat readings before and have liked her in the past, I believe this was her poorest reading. My complaint isn't her voice but all of the swallowing and smacking and as good as the book was, this was distracting. The problem is the fault of the editor not noticing when the book was being recorded. I don't believe she has ever been that bad before because I have always liked her readings well enough in the past. I get immersed in a story and after a while the narrator either got better or I stopped noticing. I think this book was worth a credit or at least a try with a sale.

Story is great, narrator not so much

Any additional comments?

First of all, I read the book before I listened to the audiobook and the book is great. However, the narrator is only ok, bordering on bad, for the following reasons:

1. her voice sounds a bit whiny, which gets annoying
2. she tries to add inflections to her voice, probably to indicate emotions, but it just makes the main character sound abosolutely silly and ridiculous.
3. The voice she used for Jim is absolutely awful. Part of Jim's charm is the sarcastic tone in which he delivers his lines. She uses a voice that makes him sound like a clown, rather than sarcastic. I don't think she really understands.
4. Whenever the author switches to Jim's voice, she pauses and you can hear her suck spit into her mouth and swallow it. Disgusting and very distracting.
5. You can constantly hear the author swallowing and she pauses for long stretches of time at the wrong moments.
6. Her accents are bad. The most egregious one is what is supposed to be her English accent, which is one of the easiest ones to do. Hers, on the other hand, sounds like an Indian accent, rather than an English one.

Overall, not a good choice on narrator, although she's a little better for the Silver Dragons series, although the voices she chooses for the supporting characters still aren't good. Jim's voice just drives me nuts.

fun story, good narration, bad narrator traits

The story moves along quickly and has a lot of tongue in cheek fun. The narrator does a good job of creating different voices for different characters. Her voice changes nicely with the tone of the book. Unfortunately the recording has too many sounds of swallowing and mouth noises that I found distracting and gross. I had to listen with the volume down so that I couldn't hear her mouth noises.

Yup, I was slain! - Yikes. Pass, Pass, Pass

The story is set in France about a main character named Aisling Grey. She is likable enough but just way to much of a caricature for my taste. To be sure, there are a number of times where there are light moments and humor, but they are way too far apart to save this novel. The central plot does not create enough conflict that you get overly interested. It is more of a lackadaisical plot that bobs and weaves but with no real drama. If it weren’t for the daemon dog, Jim, I don’t know if I could even have finished it.

The Narration by Barbara Rosenblat is just plain horrendous. First Aisling Grey is supposed to be 32 in this novel. Rosenblat’s voice for her maker her sound like she is in her late forties and not at all attractive. The voice she uses for Aisling’s daemon, Jim, sounds like Steve Urkel from Family Matters. If you do ignore my review and listen, do not use enhanced mode, she has the most annoying unbecoming narration habits – you can hear her swallowing almost every sentence. I think that her narration is horrendous enough to ward you off the series – pardon the pun. I notice that Rosenblat has done other novel for MacAlister – not good.

I admit, I’ve read positive reviews. However, if you like this book I would steer you to Betsy in MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead series. That’s a vampire series that’s got a lot of laughs with excellent narration. I have to say punt on this and the others in this series – usually the first book is the best and if they get worse from here – oh boy and Aisling is a big don't care.

Good Book, Distracting Noise

I read this book in paperback years ago and thought it might be nice to revisit it in audio form. It is a funny, witty and very entertaining story. My biggest problem is the narrator. It is not the voices she does, because they are very good. My problem is the swallowing sound that she makes constantly. I usually listen to audio books on my Ipod. The sound is quite distracting and a little disgusting to listen to it through earphones. I'm not really happy about having to write this review, but I just want anyone else who would purchase this to be aware that the noise occurs ALOT. Other than that, I have no problem with the story or narrator.

Really funny!

Funny, sexy and entertaining. Characters you'd like to meet & spend time with. The narration was outstanding. Reminds me of the Evanovich character Stephanie Plumb but in a comic Purgatory.

You will LOVE Katie MacAlister's Books

This is the latest in her dragon series on audible.com. Good story line with great characters. The narrator is good and gives life to the various and different story lines involved in each of her books. I look forward to seeing the entire series to download in the future. Please do not change narrators. This one is perfect for the books.
