Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F-ck and Get Your Sh-t Together comes more straight talk about how to stand up for who you are and what you really want, need, and deserve - showing when it's okay to be selfish, why it's pointless to be perfect, and how to be "difficult".

Being yourself should be easy, yet too many of us struggle to live on other people's terms instead of our own. Rather than feeling large and in charge, we feel little and belittled.

Sound familiar? Best-selling "anti-guru" Sarah Knight has three simple words for you:

You do you.

It's time to start putting your happiness first - and stop letting other people tell you what to do, how to do it, or why it can't be done. And don't panic! You can do it without losing friends and alienating people. Knight delivers her trademark no-bullsh-t advice about:

  • The tyranny of "just because"
  • The social contract and how to amend it
  • Turning "flaws" into strengths - aka "mental redecorating"
  • Why it's not your job to be nice
  • Letting your freak flag fly
  • How to take risks, silence the doubters, and prove the haters wrong

Praise for Sarah Knight:

"Hilarious...truly practical." (Booklist)

Review of You Do You: How to Be Who You Are...

I thought the title held a promise for readers to learn at least a few useful nuggets to employ while traveling the road of life. Unfortunately, there was nothing illuminating and only hours of things that most people in first world countries have experienced and gotten a handle on without a lot of deep thought and no self-recrimination. The listen would have been completely mind-numbing had it not been for the author's incessant swearing and vulgarities. She reminds me of a good female friend at work who speaks her mind and uses the most obscene language while doing so. She is a kick to talk with but a little bit of her goes a long way. In short, this book was a complete waste of money and there are innumerable better "listens" available from Audible..

Not what I expected

Seemed like an interesting topic, however it’s just full of talk. Nothing here for me!

The author can be herself, I just wouldn’t hang out with her. With all due respect, there are other self-help books out there.

Self righteous claptrap

This woman is rebellious and insecure and wrote this book for the sake of being heard, like a petulant child. Full of tired clichés, the irony is she thinks she is nonconformist, but is ultimately conforming to modern social/psychobabble. Waste of time and not for those seeking wisdom.

Too much foul language

I can have a potty mouth at times, but the constant use of foul language in this book is unnecessary and distracting. I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes. Very disappointing.

Ridiculous! Author is Full of resentment & anger

I thought this would be a strategy book or that I would gain some knowledge. All I got was her angry self telling us to be kind when we don’t agree to conform to others wishes, yet she doesn’t seem to listen to her own advice. She seems really angry & too much sarcasm is going on that it gets hard to take this seriously. I felt like it is a “venting” session on her part, I’m trying to learn to be calm & kind when disagreeing to be an authentic person but her description fits the angry approach that I am trying to change!
I do not recommend this book unless you are angry already and just want to hear someone ‘vent’ that angry-ness onto you more.
I’m already angry & I’m already sarcastic and I need to change that & looking for strategies without the all the anger & foul language, resentment, & anger I get from the author....Too harsh.

"Being yourself should be easy..."

It is a good theme to think about, to believe we are worth celebrating. I like her idea to turn flaws into strengths. She embodies it.

As always, she rocks it.

Stay for the entire thing- the epilogue is amazing and brings it all home. You do you, but let others be themselves too.

AWESOME

Excellent philosophy without being preachy. Love the way the author presented simple concrete solutions! I'd say more but going to get her other books instead!!
