Publisher's Summary

Is it possible to heal by thought alone - without drugs or surgery? The truth is that it happens more often than you might expect. In You Are the Placebo, Dr. Joe Dispenza shares numerous documented cases of those who reversed cancer, heart disease, depression, crippling arthritis, and even the tremors of Parkinson’s disease by believing in a placebo. Similarly, Dr. Joe tells of how others have gotten sick and even died the victims of a hex or voodoo curse - or after being misdiagnosed with a fatal illness. Belief can be so strong that pharmaceutical companies use double- and triple-blind randomized studies to try to exclude the power of the mind over the body when evaluating new drugs.

Dr. Joe does more than simply explore the history and the physiology of the placebo effect. He asks the question: “Is it possible to teach the principles of the placebo, and without relying on any external substance, produce the same internal changes in a person’s health and ultimately in his or her life?” Then he shares scientific evidence (including color brain scans) of amazing healings from his workshops, in which participants learn his model of personal transformation, based on practical applications of the so-called placebo effect. The book ends with a “how-to” meditation for changing beliefs and perceptions that hold us back - the first step in healing.

You Are the Placebo combines the latest research in neuroscience, biology, psychology, hypnosis, behavioral conditioning, and quantum physics to demystify the workings of the placebo effect...and show how the seemingly impossible can become possible.

Terrible Choice for Audio

Recommend reading print version for all the referenced figures. 90% of the book is about the "why" and examples, and the last 10% is about the "how", but just references "figures" for meditation guides which are of no use when listening to the book.

Very good, though very similar to his past works

I think I’d start by saying that if you’re new to Dispenza’s work, you’ll more than likely enjoy this one. It’s chock-full of wisdom, insights, and studies explaining how so much of what happens in our lives is a result of our thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs. As the title explains, we are the placebo; we can use our minds to transform our lives.

However, if you’ve read any of his previous works, such as “Evolve Your Brain” or “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself,” then you’ll likely find that there’s not all that much new content here. If you’re a die-hard fan of Dispenza’s, then this will be nothing to worry about, but if you’re just a “regular” fan, you might find this one to be frustratingly “too much of the same old thing.”

As a stand-alone book, this is a very good title in its own right. However, I just have to knock a star off for the lack of originality when compared to its predecessors. There’s all the normal Dispenza-style content here, so whether you end up enjoying this one will likely depend on if you think that’s a good or bad thing. I’d recommend, but only if you haven’t already read “Evolve Your Brain” and “Breaking the Habit.”

it is a sales pitch for the meditations

I kept waiting to get to the meditation part only to find out that it's something else you need to buy or read to yourself on a pdf.

This book had good stories and it was trying to explain his point of view. But it was overly long to just convince me to do meditation. I always try to ask myself at the end of the book will I read this again? The answer is most likely no. I am gonna try buying his meditations and I will update this if I can.

Best read, not listened to

This is an excellent and informative book. There are graphs and figures which do not translate well to audio, as well as some important meditations in the end, which do not come across in the audio version.

A little woo-woo for my taste

The placebo effect exists and it's real. I have no doubt that some things happen without a physical cause, and I believe that the substance we call "life" is more than atoms and molecules bumping into one another. Yet in this book are a few scientifically-disproved theories being dispensed as fact, and many of the anecdotes sound pretty sketchy. Having said that, as one who has difficulty meditating - heck, I even have difficulty sleeping - because my thinking brain and its stress 100% runs the show, I do look forward to giving the 3-week suggested meditation practice a try. I've wasted more time doing less valuable things.

Possibly my most important take-away is the need for persistence and patience. I love the example of the stallion turning toward the mares and being repeatedly, gently yet firmly, redirected ahead.

Starts strong, devolves in to BS

Some good ideas, meditation, self inducing placebo state. These things are possible and potentially good.

But most of the book is junk science and the author trying to sell you on his programs.

A game changing book for healing of all kinds

Dr. Joe Dispenza has daringly put forth a most fascinating and hopeful idea and about self healing - healing through the unknown through meditation and finding the balance between over trying and over surrendering. He bases his ideas on sound biological information and that’s where he really shines. However, when it came to talking about quantum mechanics such as saying how we need to become like waves to change matter because matter cannot change matter, or spin at a faster vibration I found this part to be unsupported by evidence and not thoroughly explained. The author’s lack of understanding in this particular field of science became quite apparent. This is not to say that his overall message is not true and that the most important thing regardless of whether the QM stuff is true, is the potential and possibility for each individual to go beyond survival, to heal, and to thrive and live in joy. Marrying elevated positive emotions with the deep desire/intention to change our condition based upon a foundational conviction that this change is indeed possible is the doorway to amazing transformation (this is certainly not a new idea and also promoted by others in the self healing or personal transformation space). The key to this doorway as eloquently explained by Dr. Dispenza is meditation and surrender to the unknown where we can be touched by an unconditional love and light that is beyond us and experience wholeness and joy beyond words.

If you are looking to change yourself…

And your life, then please give this a chance. Approach the subjects and listen with an open mind. From the first, the work is compelling. The work is backed by research. The research and the outcomes of the mindfulness work are nothing short of amazing. It made me want to dive deeper into exploring the deeper meaning of being me and the outcomes of my own health as it relates to past traumas.

The purpose of this book, any of Dispenza’s books, is to open the door to possibility for anyone that is willing to listen. If you are as intrigued as I am, you will want to dig deeper. The book in and of itself is not, nor is it meant to be the curative, the book is a vehicle to set us on a journey to find the curative within ourselves.

warning you have to buy his meditation separately.

this was a great book and I really was excited and anticipating the end chapter where he said he would give us a guided meditation. unfortunately when we got to the last chapter he just told us what the meditations were going to be about. you have to go to his website and buy those separately.

Great book with great narration

Another great book by Dr. Joe Dispenza. It's easy to be discouraged at the beginning of the book by the abundance of information that the writer provides, but when you take your time and find a suitable pace, the book will open so many windows in your head that, at one point, you will start to laugh because you know that they were there all the time... but somebody needed to hand you a wet cloth to wipe the dirt off:)

50 minutes in, and full of self promotion

50 minutes in, and full of self promotion. 50 minutes in, and starting to get really bored of this book, waiting for something useful to be revealed. The entire preface is a rambling self-promotion about the authors other books and courses. The so-called introduction, so far spent 15 minutes just telling me all about what he’s going to tell me, and I’m wondering whether he’s ever going to get to telling me anything of value. I’ll give it another 15 minutes, then I’m done and on to something more practical

Real game changer ,

I really enjoyed this book , I did get a bit lost in some sections , particularly in some of the scientific explanations, but this is no away with fairies book , it has good research to back it up and with practice I think you can change your own perceptions and improve your health and quality of life , but the work needs to be put in .

Sometimes rather technical, but for the most part the most incredible and inspiring book I've ever read. I had no idea that we each had so much potential inside us, so much possibility for change and healing both physically and mentally. Change starts today!

Informative and Insightful

I enjoyed listening to the audiobook and the narrator did well. There is a lot of inspiring information which leads to learn more. I've meditated for years and had a certain perspective that it's a tool with beneficial results. Dr Joe's meditations are the engine of changing one's life. I totally relate to our quality of life being a reflection of our internal world.
Unfortunately most of my listening time is while I'm driving, making it impossible to look at the figures in the PDF he refers to.
