Publisher's Summary

The death of a fiendish nobleman strikes close to home as Sebastian St. Cyr is tasked with finding the killer to save his young cousin from persecution in this riveting new historical mystery from the USA Today best-selling author of Why Kill the Innocent....

When the handsome but dissolute young gentleman Lord Ashworth is found brutally murdered, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is called in by Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy to help catch the killer. Just seven months before, Sebastian had suspected Ashworth of aiding one of his longtime friends and companions in the kidnapping and murder of a string of vulnerable street children. But Sebastian was never able to prove Ashworth's complicity. Nor was he able to prevent his troubled, headstrong young niece Stephanie from entering into a disastrous marriage with the dangerous nobleman.

Stephanie has survived the difficult birth of twin sons. But Sebastian soon discovers that her marriage has quickly degenerated into a sham. Ashworth abandoned his pregnant bride at his father's Park Street mansion and has continued living an essentially bachelor existence. And mounting evidence - ranging from a small bloody handprint to a woman's silk stocking - suggests that Ashworth's killer was a woman.

Sebastian is tasked with unraveling the shocking nest of secrets surrounding Ashworth's life to keep Stephanie from being punished for his death.

Loved it but not all I had hoped for.

Here we are at another installment in the lives of Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin and his lady wife Hero. We find Devlin being called to the scene of another ghastly murder of a member of the peerage. Only this time He has a personal interest in the case. His niece Stephanie's debauched rake of a husband has been murdered. It's good riddance to bad rubbish as far as many are concerned but especially for Stephanie. It is now up to Sebastian to find his killer and prove his niece innocent of the crime. The story is very well written and researched. Harris brings the historical facts to life for us in a most entertaining way. The only disappointment I had with the book was that no new info was given concerning Sebastian's search for his real father and the possible Scottish connection. I highly recommend this one.

Not the best in the series

This wasn’t the best plot in the series, but it was still definitely worth a listen. Davina Porter, was always, did an excellent job with the characters and accents.

Suspenseful and Atmospheric

I love this series and this particular book is another great one. Besides excellent plotting and mystery building and engaging characters, the series offers a wealth of historical detail, putting history in a contextual and personal perspective that I find informative and enjoyable. I now feel much more acquainted with Regency England.

Not as good as previous books in series

There are some very interesting historical details in this book but, though the bodies do pile up, the story is kind of lame. And, sadly, Hero has become a boring stage prop. The personal stories of the main characters did not advance in this book, and I missed that element.

Harris and Porter dance in sync

Another fantastically chilling St. Cyr mystery by C S Harris. She manages to tell a gripping murder story while simultaneously unveiling the dismal inequality of the past and making the reader fall in love with her characters. Davina Porter is an outstanding and sensitive narrator. Brava!!!

loved it

Another great addition to the series. First time I ever skipped a book in the series but I was anxious to see what happened to Ashford and how Sebastian's niece Stephanie may be involved. Love "seeing" all the regular characters. especially Hero, Simon and Gibson.

They did it again...

I could listen to Davina Porter read a telephone book (remember those?). She is the BEST Narrator/Reader around. I look forward to this time of year because a new addition of series is released. C.S. Harris thank you for writing these books and Davina Porter thank you for narrating them for us. ( And the Outlander series too❤️)

The killer is obvious...

From just about the beginning of the novel but what a ride getting there! Starts slow but eventually picks up with a satisfying finish. Not to mention that the narrator, Davina Porter, is first rate, as always.

So if you don’t mind figuring out who done it from the very beginning it’s still an enjoyable listen.
