Resumen del Editor

Sebastian St. Cyr must confront a savage killer and save his closest friend from the hangman’s noose in this heart-pounding new historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of When Blood Lies.

June 1815. The people of London wait breathlessly for news as Napoléon and the forces united against him hurtle toward their final reckoning at Waterloo. Among them is Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, frustrated to find himself sidelined while recovering from a dangerous wound he recently received in Paris.

When the mutilated corpse of Major Miles Sedgewick surfaces from the murky waters of the Thames, Sebastian is drawn into the murder investigation, which threatens one of his oldest and dearest friends, Irish surgeon Paul Gibson.

Gibson’s lover, Alexi Sauvage, was tricked into a bigamous marriage with the victim. But there are other women who may have wanted the cruel, faithless major dead. His mistress, his neglected wife, and their young governess whom he seduced all make for compelling suspects. Even more interesting to Sebastian is one of Sedgewick’s fellow officers, a man who shared Sedgewick’s macabre fascination with both old English folklore and the occult.

And then there’s the valuable list of Londoners who once spied for Napoléon that Sedgewick was said to be transporting to Charles, Lord Jarvis, the Regent’s powerful cousin, who also happens to be Sebastian’s father-in-law.

The deeper Sebastian delves into Sedgewick’s life, the more he learns about the major’s many secrets, and the list of people who could have wanted him dead grows even longer.

Soon others connected to Sedgewick begin to die strange, brutal deaths, and more evidence emerges that links Alexi to the crimes. Certain that Gibson will be implicated alongside Alexi, Sebastian finds himself in a desperate race against time to stop the killing and save his friends from the terror of the gallows.

Worth the wait

I love this series. The characters are fascinating, and the plots align with actual historical events. Now, with Jenny Sterlin as the new narrator, it's even better. I've always loved her narration of the Mary Russell series, so it was a nice surprise to hear her narrate this book. I hope she narrates all of the future books.

One of my favorite series.

I always look forward to the continuing story of the St. Cyr's. I was not disappointed with all the twists and turns you could want as well as the interesting characters. On the cusp of the Battle of Waterloo, Ms. Harris conveys the tension of that time in London, Such a good story I was sorry to finish. I can't wait until next spring.

Worth the wait for St. Cyr's latest mystery tale!

It was well worth the wait for this latest book in my favorite mystery series. Now, the waiting begins all over again for the next installment. So well researched and cleverly written, you are kept guessing until the last chapter. Gritty and graphic, C.S. Harris delves into the darkest and most poverty-stricken element of London society while flirting with the social taboos of the aristocracy and the powerful of the time. Harris is a masterful storyteller. Narration by Jenny Sterling is superb.

As usual worth reading

I’m still enjoying this series. Unlike many others that begin to get sloppy and diluted if they go on too long, this one continues to be well- written and engaging.

Not what I expected

The story told in this book was so not what I expected. I guess I was hoping for a continuation of the storyline from the previous book as to who is actually Sebastian's father. Nevertheless, this eighteenth book was altogether interesting on its own. Viscount Devlin is caught up in a whirlwind of events from Napoleon's Waterloo, a missing baby, assassins, a shameful event in England's history and the lives of his friends, Gibson and Alexi, on the line. Tipping events off is the finding of the mutilated corpse of an old army acquaintance, Major Sedgewick, which is soon followed by more mutilation deaths. Sebastian finds himself in a race against time to stop the killings and save his friends.
Harris, as usual, is able to beautifully blend history and fiction to bring an exhilarating story to the forefront. This series only gets better with each new book. I sincerely hope this series has a long life. Looking forward, ever hopefully, to the next adventure of Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his faithful wife and partner Lady Hero Jarvis St. Cyr.

Absolutely wonderful

I love this series for the beautiful depictions of life in regency England as well as a glimpse into the seedier aspects. I am always totally engaged by the story. This story was everything I had hoped it would be . With a gruesome and interesting murder mystery and a quite well developed investigation. I enjoy how Sebastian and Hero work well together. I was a highly satisfying read. The narrator does an excellent job.

The next wait has begun

Thoroughly enjoyable read. Can hardly wait for the next one. The main characters, as usual, were brought to life, but what I enjoy about these books, is the consistency of the minor characters as well. I appreciate the historical background, especially since the characters touch on the fact that not everything undertaken for one’s leader or religion, is in itself inherently honorable.

Great

Good writing, as usual. Very good narration. Both the Irish and the Scotts sound Irish, but other than that quite good,
