An exciting sequel to Beneath the Roots!

Mer is home with her loving father and brother, recovering from the horrific experiences she endured while in the fae kingdom. Sir Avry is kept far from her as the king engages him in duties aimed to keep him close and to keep him safe. The king's legitimate successor would not rule the kingdom well, so he intends to select Sir Avry as his successor.

Avry fears that the very independent Mer would resist marrying him as king. His life is at risk too. Some would stop at absolutely nothing to preserve the traditional line of succession. Then the crazed fae king unleashes a fearsome and colossal White Bird to exact revenge on the kingdom. Mer gets swept away through this conflict. Avry is once again driven to find and rescue the woman he loves.

I loved this book! I was longing for Mer's family to be lifted out of their utter poverty. I could barely stand the sadness in Avry, loving someone he feared he could never have. The back story of The White Bird and the centuries of her mistreatment was heartbreaking. The political intrigue and shocking back-stabbing was riveting. The father-son-like-love between Avry and the king was touching.

The ending was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! There was a satisfying and exultant climax to the story. Bravo to W.K. Greyling!

Enjoyable and original

This review is for both books in this series as I listened to/ read them back to back.
I initially started with the audio version of Beneath The Roots but just couldn’t get into it - there’s nothing wrong with Krista Nicely’s narration as such, it just starts rather slowly and my attention kept wandering. I then switched to the ebook and got quickly drawn into the story - once that had happened I could alternate between reading and listening and enjoyed both.
The second volume is narrated by Tim H. Dixon who I found easy to listen to right from the start - by then I was invested in the characters of course and wanted to see what was going to happen to them.
The story itself is at the darker end of the fairy-tale spectrum (think Grimm rather than Disney), there’s plenty of original elements in both the plot and world building, the characters are layered and interesting and largely manage to avoid the typical fantasy stereotypes and tropes (a few of those we all want of course!) and the whole thing culminated in a satisfying ending. Great stuff!

Loved it!

This book was delightful. It was a great continuation and ending to Beneath the Roots. It’s refreshing to read a fantasy series that doesn’t get bogged down with massive world building or have a zillion characters to keep track of. The story was well paced and the love story was adorable. Only bummer is that it’s a duology, so there’s no more to come. I will definitely miss Mer and Avry.

Thumbs up!

The second novel was really enjoyable just like the first one. It reads like a fairy tale almost. Knight trying to find love but still follow the rules of the king. I felt like there were more serious emotions that the main characters were dealing with in the second novel. There’s still politics and romance. It was a really good continuation of the first book and the ending was really great!

Great continuation

I really enjoyed book one and book two kept me engaged and entertained. The details pave the way to a vivid ride of adventure and romance. Start with book one and your guaranteed to enjoy White Bird. The narration was very good and fitting.

Great fantasy, cute romance

I enjoyed reading this book. The world it took place on was interesting and the characters were realistic.

Between this book and the first, I enjoyed the romance between the main characters. It was a slow burn, but very fulfilling in the end.

The narrator changed for this book and I ended up liking this narrator, it took me a while to get used to it, I think because I had gotten used to the first narrator.

I enjoyed this and will continue to read this author!

Intense

This story continues the story of the two young people after their return and the betrayal that they are subjected to. The action and the drama are good and the characters develop throughout the ordeal as they overcome various issues thrown into their paths.

The narration of this book is very good with the voices being done for each character.

This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

satisfying finish

really liked how detailed the end of the book was, not an ambiguous finish many books have - it continued for a bit to show how it all unfolded instead of "happy ever after". And it was also nice to see the side story of he fmwhite doe play out. highly recommend!

Great Series

This book started were the other on finished. I couldn't stop listening to it. I really enjoyed it. It had a very captivating story and was well written. Great series a must listen to. The narration by Tim was great. When I first started listening it was a bit strange have it read by a man when the first book was read by a woman. But Tim did a fantastic job.

Unexpected actions and a very awesome ending

I love how the author managed to tell this multi layerd story. I'm very pleased to have learned the whole history of the fae and even happier that Mer finally stepped on her pried and did the right thing.
I love how it ended even wepped a bit it's easily my favorite story.

Even better than the first

Just as unpredictable as the first and answered questions about the first book that I didn’t even know I had. Really beautiful ending and again, well paced. Continued to go against the trope of damsel falling in love with rescuer and felt very authentic. The change of narrator worked surprisingly well and I found myself just as captured as with the previous one, they were both picked very well.

Lose yourself in this wonderful story

A fabulous fantasy story that really tugged on my heart strings a few times. Doing my weekly grocery shop with my headphones in, I got quite teary at the end of chapter 2. Totally invested in the characters and not really knowing where the twists and turns would take me. Mer & Avry are an absolute delight and quite Pride and Prejudice-esque at times (especially Book 1) Well done Tim. H. Dixon on great narration and a big thank you to W.K. Greyling for nearly 12 hours of escapism.

Amazing!

I loved this book even better than the 1st one! Never a dull moment! Loved Sir Avry's relentlessness, such a strong and likeable character! And the narrator did a fine job!
