Publisher's summary

From the internationally best-selling author of The Gilded Hour comes Sara Donati's enthralling epic about two trailblazing female doctors in 19th-century New York.

Obstetrician Dr. Sophie Savard returns home to the achingly familiar rhythms of Manhattan in the early spring of 1884 to rebuild her life after the death of her husband. With the help of Dr. Anna Savard, her dearest friend, cousin, and fellow physician she plans to continue her work aiding the disadvantaged women society would rather forget.

As Sophie sets out to construct a new life for herself, Anna's husband, Detective Sergeant Jack Mezzanotte calls on them both to consult on two new cases: the wife of a prominent banker has disappeared into thin air, and the corpse of a young woman is found with baffling wounds that suggest a killer is on the loose. In New York it seems that the advancement of women has brought out the worst in some men. Unable to ignore the plight of New York's less fortunate, these intrepid cousins draw on all resources to protect their patients.

Wonderful world brought to life!

I’ve loved all of Donati’s books, but I didn’t discover them until long after they were written so this is my first that I had to wait for patiently. It was completely worth it. The characters are the kind you can’t wait to curl up with any chance you get. I’m looking forward to going back and listening again to stories of Aunt Quinlan’s early life, and wonder if there’s a chunk of time between then and the gilded hour that needs to become a book?

The author is a great storyteller and interjects humor throughout a serious story. Narrator did a great job.

What a fabulously complex story!

I have listened to most of what Sara Donati has written, and Kate Reading, her reader for this novel, is also a perennial favorite. Such talent combined for fabulous fun!

Treat yourself to the unfoldment of old, treasured characters and be delighted by new ones, even down to the dog, Pip.

Captivating Novel

I love this story. Sarah is such a wonderful story teller. I sit for lost in the tale of these remarkable families. Unable to remember that this a novel . not real. The women of this era truly are my hero's. they overcame so many obstacles to become physicians. As did the household help of the time. refreshing to see that attitudes was not shared by these remarkable families. enjoy this remarkable story.

Thank God Kate is back

I was really looking forward to this book and I can see people are upset that the narrator has changed, I AM NOT! I listened to all of the Lake in the Clouds series and Kate Reading was awesome in that series, just like WOT series. When I finally listened to the first book of this series the narrator change and it threw me off. Kate just does a way better job at voices and accents.

As for the story, people are also upset because of the direction she took with the kids, or at least one of them., To me it was expected so no real surprise there.

I am not quit finished yet but I did have to make a remark or two.

Worthwhile Sequel

I enjoyed this book, and I don’t regret the time reading it. That said, there was probably more review of the previous novel than necessary at the beginning which made it a bit slow to start. The narrator is fine but a marked change from the narrator of the previous book, which was a bit of a difficult transition to make mentally.

Huge fan

Love the story and it is always great to visit old friends. I only wished the narrator had used the same voices and accents she did in the first novel of the series. It took me several chapters to get used to it. I had those accents in my head when I read the book so was a little disappointed they were not the same as the first audio book. Love Sara Donati!
