Publisher's Summary

Number one New York Times best-selling author J.R. Ward is heating things up this winter with a holiday novel featuring some of her most iconic Black Dagger Brothers.

When Trez lost his beloved to a tragic death (The Shadows, Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 13), his soul was crushed and his destiny seemed relegated to suffering. But when he meets a mysterious female, he becomes convinced his true love has been reincarnated. Is he right? Or has his grief created a disastrous delusion?

Therese has come to Caldwell to escape a rift with her bloodline. The revelation that she was adopted and not born into her family shakes the foundations of her identity, and she is determined to make it on her own. Her attraction to Trez is not what she’s looking for, except the sexy Shadow proves to be undeniable.

Has fate provided a grieving widower with a second chance...or is Trez too blinded by the past to see the present for what it really is? In this sensual, arresting book full of the themes of redemption and self-discovery, two lost souls find themselves at a crossroads where the heart is the only compass that can be trusted...but that may require a courage that neither of them possesses.

Oh I have to say I wasn't sure about this book when it was announced but I am feeling very sentimental now that I finished it. I am glad that Trez gets his HEA and I personally loved how the WARDen made it happen. This is too long to really be a novella but it really is because it's nothing like the full length books with all the world things going on, this one is really just Trez & Therese's story. I always love when we get an extra book in this series, it's like a Christmas treat and really made me excited for The Sinner coming next.

Love Jim Frangione, he will always be the brothers to me... even if he had to change the pronunciation after all this time (I like the way he pronounced Havers and Zhex better before lol)

Good Closure

The Good: For BDB fans whose hearts were crushed by The Shadows (and come on we all were) this is a wonderful balm of closure. Yes, there are miracle and mystical elements at play but even as an atheist I did not find it heavy handed or preachy.

The Missing: One of the reasons I am a rabid (yes I get shots) Ward fan is her humor and her world building/continuation. There is little of this here. Some humor with Lassiter- naturally- and we get to see Rhage and Mary together but that’s about it. The yearning that exists as I wait for another BDB book was not quenched by this one. A first for me. I feel like I am just now waiting for the Sinner- speaking of which.

The Extra: We get the first chapter of The Sinner! Thank you Santa!

The Other Talent: Jim Frangione is sheer perfection

WARNING: If the holidays are particularly hard for you due to loss I am not sure this will make you feel better- you might want to wait till after holiday time to listen.

ONCE AGAIN A FIVE ⭐️ FAULTLESS PNR

Every single time I see that this talented author is going to release another new book in her iconic BDB series I can’t wait to get my greedy paws on it because, after seventeen books in the series, I already know it’s going to be all-consuming, it’s going to have highly charged chemistry and it’s going to be epic. And this two lost souls adrift from one-another didn’t disappoint. There were no Lessers, no Omega or other evil threats.. but the relationship between Therese and Trez was enough of a rollercoaster to keep you glued to the unfolding chapters as they both struggled strange feelings of déjà vu.. of coming home.. of two lost souls connecting again as they finally embraced the miracle they had been given.

There’s everything you’d expect from this author.. sharp slick comments, alpha vampire behaviour, sex, angst, drama, pulse-pounding passion, intrigue, suspense and much much more in Caldwell USA between the lost and alone Shadow Walker and his waitress soul-mate salvation. J.R’s world-building continues to grow, her imagination has no walls and her writing skills are endless as she invites you back to the city you know so well and reacquaints you with well-loved characters from the past whilst introducing you to new ones too. Primarily told in dual POV chapters and once again Jim Frangione was brilliant at conveying the raw emotions, smoothly bringing each scene and its characters to life and delivering a 5 star performance.

Worth a credit? Yes, Therese and Trez’s emotionally rocky road to each other didn’t go smoothly.. but it was heartwarming that Trez can finally stop mourning his Queen. I stumbled across Dark Lover (book 1) back in 2011 and ever since I’ve been impressed by, and hooked firmly into, the BD Brotherhood because each stunning story is unique, compelling and seamlessly flows to the next one without feeling stale.. and then they leave you craving more.

Just call me Lasiclaus

With how The Shadows ended I was so looking forward to this book. Selena and Trez deserved a better conclusion than what they got, and J R found a way to make it work. This is more of a second chance romance rather than a BDB novel. So there's no fighting, it's more focus on their relationship and accepting the amazing miracle that both Trez and Therese got. Jim Frangione narration just keeps getting better, I enjoyed this Caldwell Christmas.

A Heartwarming Miracle!

I really love this book. J R Ward has put so much love, and emotions into the storyline that you are on a virtual roller coaster of feelings. Jim Frangione does such a marvelous narration that you are right there with the characters laughing and crying and totally absorbed. I very highly recommend this book.

All Hail Lassi-claus!

Thank you, Mrs. Ward, we needed this. I was worried and I shouldn’t have been. As much as I loved The Chosen Selena I wanted Therese to get her moment. If that makes sense.

The way this story unfolds it will break your heart and heal it at the same time. We really get Trez’s loss and how he feels about Therese and fate and all the stuff in the middle.

Lassiter deserves a medal. ;)

I want more BDB like right now! The bonus of the Sinner at the end.. I swear! Tease!! Lol.
Again the narration was fantastic no one else could be BDB by Jim.

No words

Finally being able to give Trez and Selena a better end to their original story was wonderful. I love both Trez and Selena and being able to see them get their happy ever after was great. Even having selena have a new story and in the end allowing both her stories to finally merge makes me wonder what will happen with John. Will John be able to complete his true story and have everything come together. JR Ward is a wonderful writer and being able to read more of the BDB series is great and this one just made me realize how much I love all the characters in the story. Being able to get more incite on all the characters is wonderful. and being able to see Trez finally become happy after months of sorrow was even more wonderful. However Iam and Xhex could have been a little more subtle about their disapproval of Trez and his feelings for Therese. It also would have been wonderful to find out what had caused Therese to move to Caldwell in the first place.

Spoilers

I am probably going to be strung up for this review, but oh well. I had such a hard time getting into this book because Trez already had his story in The Shadows. The Shadows was a beautiful and tragic story. I never cried so much while reading a novel. I loved it and still feel like it Ward’s best. “Spoiler” for The Shadows” Trez does not get a HEA, and it is so raw and heartbreaking.

The Shadows was the first time Ward didn’t give us a HEA, it was unexpected, yet the story was unforgettable because it was so tragic. Then here comes Where Winter Finds You and with it Trez’s HAE. I wasn’t interested from the beginning. I know I should keep an open mind, and yes, I want Trez to have a HEA, I just was not invested this time around. Not at all.

“Spoiler” Trez meets Therese, who is a doppelganger for his dead wife. Of course, this causes all sorts of feelings and confusion. Then Hex comes in and tells him she thinks Therese is Selena or a version of her. Even weirder. I would understand that if this series spanned a vast timeframe, but it does not. It all takes place present day. Selena died about two years before the events in this book. HOW is there a fully-grown reincarnation of her? Then when Lassiter comes in and confirms Therese is Salina, it didn’t make sense.

I honestly don’t know how this story could have been improved. Other than not killing Selena, to begin with. I am not a fan of this version. For the first time, I am rating a J.R. Ward book 2 Boundless stars.
