Quick read that had many holes

Enjoyable and a quick read!
The story line is truly a happy ever after sexy fairy tale!
It would of been good to explain where the butler came from and was he human at one time! Why his mother aged and why she treated her son badly!! Where was vampire dad!
This could of easily been a full length book!!

Great, stand-alone listen

It was short and easy to listen to, but definitely a plus if you've already listened to/read the BDB series as this is set in the same world.
It left a feeling of wanting more with several plot holes, but just take it as a bit into the BDB world and enjoy the ride.

Suspected precursor to BDB

The broad outline on Michael is similar to BDB vampires but several aspects differ. How does he thrive on human blood? How does his human wife survive childbirth? How does he not recognize other vampires? The story is very good with a tough as brass lawyer of huge corporate mergers and acquisitions who isn’t interested in a “relationship” as the heroine. The hero is a tragically imprisoned vampire who was imprisoned by his wealthy mother when he was a preteen because his vampire nature was surfacing. He was the family’s dirty secret for 75 years. The BDB vampires have become more complex since then in some ways but this novella stands on its own merit as an example of the evolution of the Caldwell, NY vampire in the author’s mind.

Pretty good for a short story

Although reminiscent of a BDB vampire this seems to be a complete stand-alone not associated with the series.
Those of us who read BDB and are familiar with Ward's vampires will find this an easy entertaining read with no need for a backstory. Others should enjoy it as well and may find it an interesting introduction to Ward's world.

Because of the nature of short stories, I find it hard to ever rate them more than 3.5 stars, but with this being an audible it gets an overall of 4.
