Publisher's summary

The true story of Melody, aged 8, the last of five siblings to be taken from her drug dependent single mother and brought into care.

When Cathy is told about Melody’s terrible childhood, she is sure she’s heard it all before. But it isn’t long before she feels there is more going on than she or the social services are aware of. Although Melody is angry at having to leave her mother, as many children coming into care are, she also worries about her obsessively – far more than is usual. Amanda, Melody’s mother, is also angry and takes it out on Cathy at contact, which again is something Cathy has experienced before. Yet there is a lost and vulnerable look about Amanda, and Cathy starts to see why Melody worries about her and feels she needs looking after.

When Amanda misses contact, it is assumed she has forgotten, but nothing could have been further from the truth…

nothing worked out how I thought

What a great book! I must say I didn't see this kind of neglect coming but the way Melody was eager to work with you. It's like the anger never existed. Donna (the saddest girl in the world) had real anger issues. But Melody. No way. I didn't see Amanda's diagnosis coming either. This one was a real page turner because everything I expected to happen, didn't. This goes to show you that anyone can show up on your doorstep in fostering. Great book. I found myself slipping into book mode even while Denica read to me and had to keep reminding myself Melody was a real girl and this is a real event. I definitely shed a few tears with this one. Once again. You have outdone yourself Cathy! Fantastic read!

Another wonderful read!

I was not expecting the ending, but what a touching way to end something so sadly, simply amazing. I have become addicted to Cathy’s books and none of them have disappointed yet!
Thank you!

HAPPY ENDINGS

One of my favorite! Danica brings these stories to life! Her narration and Cathy's detailed writing evokes every feeling; Sadness, despair, elation, anger and pure love draws the reader so far into the story that you feel as though your in the room.
I've lost count of the books I've read, authored By Cathy. I'm 52 years old and now considering a career in Foster Care.

There’s the Cathy I’ve Been Missing!

I’m a big Cathy Glass fan! I have read every one of her books and anxiously await her latest releases. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to give her more recent books 5 star reviews. I felt that they strayed from her narrative technique that works so well: her own point of view. That’s what I love about her books. They are so authentic. Her last few books, “The Silent Cry” and “A Long Way From Home” in particular strayed from this format. This one went back to the style of some of her classics such as “Cut,” “Damaged,” and “The Night the Angels Came.” I’ve been missing this Cathy! Melody’s story is beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful. I definitely recommend.

THE BEST YET!

I have read (via Audible) 15 of Cathy Glass' books, and I would rate every one as 5 stars. However, this one tops them all. It is an edge-of-your-seat story from beginning to end, so I wouldn't want to tell anything about any of the story. Suffice it to say that it is an amazing book, wonderfully narrated. If you like Cathy's stories of fostering in England (I'm in the U.S.) don't miss this one! The best yet!!!

nicely written

Well written. Good representation of fostering children. I like that she explains things so all can understand

Very good

I loved the story , well written and spoken. Gives me hope for the misplaced children of this world and the many possibilities of this journey.

Couldn’t get through this audio book

V E R Y slow and predictable. The narrator had an unnatural delivery in speech. Just can’t recommend.
