Publisher's summary

Former cop Cass Raines knows the streets of Chicago all too well. Now she's a private investigator and getting an exclusive glimpse into how the other half lives - and how they die....

Wealth. Power. Celebrity. Vonda Allen's glossy vanity magazine has taken the Windy City by storm, and she's well on her way to building a one-woman media empire. Everybody adores her. Except the people who work for her. And the person who's sending her flowers with death threats....

As Vonda's bodyguard, off-duty cop Ben Mickerson knows he could use some back-up - and no one fits the bill better than his ex-partner on the police force, Cass Raines. Now a full-time private eye, Cass is reluctant to take the job. She isn't keen on playing babysitter to a celebrity who's rumored to be a heartless diva. But as a favor to Ben, she signs on. But when Vonda refuses to say why someone might be after her, and two of her staff turn up dead, Ben and Cass must battle an unknown assailant bent on getting to the great lady herself, before someone else dies.

Cass finds out the hard way just how persistent a threat they face during the first stop on Vonda's book tour. As fans clamour for her autograph, things take an ugly turn when a mysterious fan shows up with flowers and slashes Ben with a knife. While her ex-partner's life hangs in the balance, Cass is left to find out what secrets Vonda is keeping, who might want her dead, and how she can bring Ben's attacker to justice before enemies in the Chicago Police Department try to stop her in her tracks.....

Cass growth

I love the evolution of the characters in these stories. Love the her and Ben remained just friends and the plot twist within the story.

Good to the Last Word

Tracy Clark has done it again...provided another great listen. Oh, how I enjoy listening to detective tales w/leads that look like me and get things done. Characters that resemble my friends that I have had since I thought crayons was a food group and coworkers I too can identify with but would never annihilate outside my daydreams.

So, what is the book about?? Well her Daddy is one persistent man and has moved back...yes he did.
She took a case w/her ex partner Dan and that has gotten everything twisted and when I say everything I mean everything ( wink-wink) twisted. Now, the crazy female she is guarding & her assistant is enough to make you roll your eyes & mutter under your breath.

Listen to the book & you will definitely find out what I am eluding to. Enjoy!

She’s done it again!

Excellent story line and delivery. The characters were consistent with prior books and their situations made sense. I can’t wait for the next book!

Differentiating Characters

I enjoyed listening to the story. I enjoyed the plot. It kept me engaged. I liked the narrator's voice, however, her efforts at differentiating Characters was not good. They all sound the same. Who's Taking Now,!

So extremely disappointed!

Can anyone write a woman cop to be a woman?! My God, I’m on chapter 33 and I hate the way Cass’s relationship is headed with Eli. First of all, I hate it when partners fall for each other, even on those TV shows. That just annoys the heck out of me. I’m really hoping Ben keeps his distance and Cass ends up with Eli. They are just so cute together from day 1. Eli sounds like a tall dark and handsome Black dream plus he’s nice and he’s there for her. You can tell he has real feelings for her and he knows how she is and respects that. That’s why he didn’t say anything to her about what he’d done. Eli is Cass’s man and he has every right to get angry and confront Feradee. My God, people take this women’s lib BS way too far and it’s so frustrating. You’d think Eli sucker punched her or something. He has feelings for her and should be able to address Feradee without her getting her panties in a bunch. She should understand that and I actually can’t read any further! I don’t even care who’s killing who or whatever else happens. She’s a female cop, not a dude. All this “I can take care of myself” “I don’t need you taking up for me” “blah, blah, blah,” is annoying and so irritating. That’s not what he was even doing. She really should have called him to go with her in the park to check the crime scene. That was just stupid and aggravating. I’m sure others will enjoy that crap but you can miss me with that! This is the first and last time I’m reading a female cop series. I was hesitant for this very reason but thought I’d give it a try. This is the end of my Cass Raines journey. And yes, I’m a woman and I cannot stand the way people take women’s lib too far and the way female cops are written!
