Resumen del Editor

From acclaimed author Tracy Clark comes a page-turning mystery featuring hard-boiled Chicago detective Harriet Foster, who’s on the hunt for a serial killer with a deadly affinity for redheads.

When a young red-haired woman is found brutally murdered in downtown Chicago, one detail stands out: the red lipstick encircling her wrists and ankles.

Detective Harriet Foster is on the case, even though she’s still grieving the sudden death of her partner. As a Black woman in a male-dominated department, Foster anticipates a rocky road ahead acclimating to a new team—and building trust with her new partner isn’t coming easily.

After another victim turns up with the same lipstick markings, Foster suspects she’s looking for a serial killer. Through a tip from a psychiatrist, Foster learns about Bodie Morgan: a troubled man with a twisted past and a penchant for pretty young redheads with the bluest eyes. As Foster wades into Morgan’s sinister history, the killer continues their gruesome assault on Chicago’s streets.

In her desperate race to catch the murderer before they strike again, Foster will have to confront the darkest of secrets—including her own.

Great cop procedural

I enjoy cop stories with a strong FMC and this book delivers. I’m really looking forward to book two. Wasn’t expecting that ending at all, this book kept me guessing.

More Twists Than a 60s Dance Contest!

Harriet Foster is a deep woman. We meet her on the day she shows up at her new precinct, her first day back since her partner committed suicide. In her last precinct parking lot. She's not over yet. It's going to take time, she knows. She's been through this before- loss is not a new concept to her, unfortunately.

It's a memorable first day back. Her new partner is the antithesis of the one she just lost. He's white, brash, overly opinionated, and not a fan of female cops. They draw a bizarre murder investigation that will be the first of several in the next few days. Harriet really may not be up for this. But what choice does she have? She's going to suck it up and live one day at a time.

I'll admit that it took me longer than usual to develop a feel for the characters. They seemed 2-dimensional for roughly half the book, or so it seemed to me. But eventually, they began to flesh out, feel more human, and engaging. The antagonists were, strangely, easier for me to get involved with. I'm not even going to unpack that concept. The important thing is that I got a feel for both good and bad guys and became fully invested in the story.

It is quite a story. It's a sea of red herrings for a while. But that's fine, because all the clues are there, and the journey is worth it. This tale is positively chilling in many ways. It becomes very difficult to understand who the bad person really is when more than one of them has an agenda of their own, and you can't help feeling like mental health may be a big issue with them. Sorry--that sounds cryptic, but I don't want to provide spoilers. Perhaps it could best be summed up with the concept that morality is personal and fluid in this novel. There's not a hard line in the sand here.

Once I fell into this story, I greatly enjoyed it. It's a treat for those who enjoy police procedurals, as the reader follows the case-building logic of the police. It's also a good psychological thriller with serious suspense and misdirection happening. I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series to see how Harriet copes after this.

I'm definitely a new fan

At first I thought it was too busy, too many characters. But as it progressed, everything tied together. I look forward to more stories with this crew.
