Starting a war with an enemy 100 times stronger is insane. It’s desperate. And it’s Earth’s only hope. A massive alien power looms over humanity, claiming Earth as its territory and humanity as its slaves. The Hegemony has already taken over one colony, yoking hundreds of thousands under their brutal rule. Every tactical exercise, every war game, and every simulation gives humanity zero chance in a defensive campaign.

Only a handful of people are struggling to keep the Imperium together, knowing that the brutality of its rule is infinitively preferable to the chaos of its fall. This is their story. Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Publisher's Summary
The conclusion to the third Ark Royal trilogy!
The Second Interstellar War - pitting humans and their Tadpole allies against an enigmatic alien empire - appears to have stalemated. Neither side can push through to the other's core systems without risking substantial losses, neither side can gain a decisive advantage. But when a brilliant human scientist invents a way to jump across the stars without a gravity tramline, an opportunity arises to strike the enemy in their undefended rear. It is an opportunity that cannot be allowed to pass.
Now, HMS Vanguard and her crew - and the largest fleet ever assembled by the nations of Earth - heads out on a do-or-die mission to challenge their enemies to one final battle...and if they lose, they will never see home again.

His other series are crap but this one is good.
The Ark Royal series is pretty decent military sci-fi. This author should just stick with this series. His other stuff is not good. Very confusing how that can be. Hope he does more Ark Royal books and less of the others.
Also, he uses "grimly" a bit too much....

So So
After enjoying the first 8 books in this series, I was disappointed in the writing, story, and performance. As someone who has done a little acting in my past, I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to voice all the different characters in these books. One annoying thing - John Naiser's voice changed dramatically from books 7 & 8. In book 9, Mr. Lister uses a blustery older man's voice much like the voice he used for the older naval admiral in the other books. It is almost like when you get to a higher position, you must bellow out everything. Annoying. His Scottish accents were great as were most of the other voices. I just did not like the voice he used for Naiser in book 9..One miss out of so many is not bad though.
The story drags a bit, uses what I have come to call cliches in Mr Nutall's universe - a ship that performs like a "wallowing pig" - it seems Mr. Nutall has to work that phrase into each of his books several times.
Hopefully book 10 will find that Mr. Nutall was reinvigorated and will get back to crisp story telling.

Baffling in many ways
Reminded why I stopped listing to this series a while ago. Unbelievable aliens and ridiculous ship physics left me disengaged and baffled. Some redeeming features to the story, but far too long spend dwelling on the minutae of "middy" life in the navy.

Bee good book
I started listening to these books because I was in between series and was looking for a new one to listen to. This one popped up in my suggested listens on audible.
I had never heard of Christofer G Nuttall before so I was a little cautious. I got through the first one and thought this series is starting off ok if a little predictable. Then about book 4 I realized wow! These books are better than my first impression. You had to listen to the first one to have the history and it is a good book but from about book 4 on they have gotten better and better. The characters get more fleshed out and change with time like normal people. It is great work.

An ok book in the series
I love the series and it's definitely worth reading as a fan. I just didn't feel immersed and 'addicted' as remember I used to be.
I think there were too many names and planet designations to remember.
It did feel like a good legacy story for some of the previous characters.
Simple and straightforward storyline.
Performance was very typical of Ralph Lister; great when speaking England-English, not great at accents and women voices are still old fashioned; soft&weak. Although an improvement from previous books where women always sounded helpless and stupid.
This is coming off as a terrible review, but I still enjoyed the book. I think there story could have been more complex (story, not Planet names) and it would have been better to have felt more what it was like on the ship.
I look forward to book 10!
