Publisher's Summary

Audiobook two of the Chronicles of Uriel Ventris

The Great Devourer is descending on the world of Tarsis Ultra, but to defeat the xenos horrors, Captain Uriel Ventris may have to embark upon a dangerous and unorthodox mission.

Listen to it because: it's a classic tale of the Space Marines against tyranids...with a twist. Conventional tactics fail, the Ultramarines way of war is insufficient...but if he uses other means to win the war, Uriel Ventris may lose far more.

The story: the Ultramarines are the epitome of a Space Marine Chapter. Warriors without peer, their name is a byword for discipline and honour, and their heroic deeds are legendary. The Great Devourer is descending on the world of Tarsis Ultra, a world under the protection of the Ultramarines. Captain Uriel Ventris and his warriors - allied with their barbaric cousins from the Mortifactors Chapter - rally the forces of the planet to defend against the tyranids. But to defeat the xenos horrors, Uriel may have to turn his back on the Ultramarines' teachings and embark upon a dangerous and unorthodox mission.

This edition also includes the prequel short story 'Leviathan', which sees Ventris and his Ultramarines board a space hulk an encounter the vanguard of the hive fleets: the feared genestealers.

Written by Graham McNeill. Running time 10 hours six minutes. Narrated by Bruce Mackinnon.

Truly boring

Not much here. Story is flat and predictable (Graham McNeill). Performance is phoned in (sometimes literally). Space marines that are 1000-10000 years old acting like children.

Summary: Don't waste your time

Incredible performance

Like all Warhammer stories this is a tale of human nature in the face of overwhelming odds. Both the good and evil that make up mankind cine together under the masterful narration of MacKinnon, with distinct character voices and emotions coming through clearly.

Great book a few setbacks though

I want to start off by saying I loved the story even though it’s not the greatest of the 40k series. Ok now that that’s out of the way unfortunately the majority of what holds this book back is the audio quality the narrators voice is fine but more than a few times it sounds like they sent in the audio clips through a phone. While I love the story, this also has the same flavor as the devastation of Baal which makes it kind of redundant.

what happened with the naration

between squeaky sounding marines. choppy lines that go from clear and close to sudden echo and distance or barely audible mumbles.

Great story. Terrible narrator.

It is clear that there were many edits in the narration as the difference in sound from the original recording and the retakes sound very different. It ruins the performance and the book should be redone with a better narrator.

Good but.

The narration kept changing and was a little distracting and took you out of the story.

Sound quality is terrible

Not sure what happened during recording but the sound is cut together from different sound quality's first time ive heard this from a 40k book and its quite off putting listening both with headphones and on a speaker. Voice acting was pretty sub par compared to the first 7 HH books and first 4 Seige Terra series.

The story is good, I was looking for something heavily involving the Nids and this did the trick. Solid 3.5/5

good story, not too good narration

The story is as good as can be expected from graham, unfortunately the narrator not so much. My biggest gripe with the narration was the constant switching of audio levels, throughout the book the narrator seems to have recorded on two different microphones one of which sounds like he is across the room. Unfortunately, this coupled with the not so great voice acting preventing me from feeling immersed in the story.

One of the best spoiled by the wrong voice

One of my favourite and first 40k books, love reading this book, and like that there are plenty of "ordinary" characters.

The narrator was the wrong choice, has quite the annoying voice and made many of the characters sound petulant rather than serious or angry.

Good story…average narration

An enjoyable story but I struggled with the choice of narrator for this book (and series). It really could have done with someone of the ilk of John Banks or Andrew Wincott, they have the tone and voices spot on for space marine novels.

The narrator sounds a bit too much like the late Rik Mayall, and once I had that in my head it continually broke my immersion in the story as I couldn’t shake the thought that Captain Flashheart was reading to me.

a good story spoiled but the wrong narrator

i gave a 5 but i do feel almost any other of the known warhammer narrators would have been far better for this series of books

Odd audio to a great second installment

Narration seems to jump from clear and close to further away, a bit strange sadly

Man vs bug!

what's not to like? I enjoyed the witnessing of a xenos/Tyranid invasion from multiple view points. And seeing overgrown men fighting overgrown bugs is always fun.
