Human stories moving and compelling. The first chapters were hard to get into but I enjoyed more and more as book went on

I loved everything. I have now listened to it twice and will read the book as soon as I get it from the library. Extraordinary work.

Best read of the year

The research that the author put in to this book helps to create rich and believable contexts across time and locations, right to the present day concerns with climate change and water pollution. This novelist manages to connect head and heart, not valuing one over the other but bringing them closer together as a complementary pair, connected by a drop of water.

Interesting characters

Everyone was sad and depressed. No one had a satisfying end to their stories—just more suffering

Interesting Story with Unsatisfying Ending

I enjoyed this story and it was interesting learning about ancient Mesopotamia but it ended a little too abruptly for me. The pacing was quite slow throughout the book which I didn’t mind but then it felt like all of a sudden it was over and there were all these loose ends left untied. I also found the narration distracting at times. It sounded like she was intentionally giving certain characters a lisp for no apparent reason.
