Publisher's summary

In this gripping follow-up to his Edgar Award-nominated mystery, The Deep, Deep Snow, Brian Freeman tells the story of Rebecca Colder, a young sheriff’s deputy who faces the most excruciating choice a mother can make.

I know you’ll never forgive me for what I did. I’m sure you’ve asked yourself that question many times over the years.

Why? Why did I do it?

Well, sweetheart, this is the answer.

I was only 26 years old when the monster came back to Black Wolf County. The answers you want begin at Christmas time that year. However, if you really want to understand everything that happened to me - to us - you have to go even further back in my life.

Years back, to the night I met the Ursulina face to face.

So let’s start there.

Drivel, Well Not All

I loved book 1 especially at the daily deal price to launch this new character and automatically downloaded this book. Ms LaVoy can really bring a story home. Book 1 had a Strong female heroine, who loves her dad. I did not realize this book was about a different character and heroine. It’s clever really, but I personally am so disappointed with this book. It didn’t help that I had downloaded a number of members only 70% off sale core romance books from the great Sandra Brown when this became available. This story’s dialogue seems more out of a mystery romance and I should have waited for more reviews to come in. This author is a hit or miss for me and l only purchase when Ms LaVoy and a few from the great Joe Barrett narrates, DO NOT MISS mr Barrett’s narrations of author Brian Haig Sean Drummond series. That is excellent story telling. Now l will have to wait for reviews on book 3 if there is one as l kept rolling my eyes as this small town story dialogue progressed. The Will scenes break your heart. However, if you are a diehard fan of this author when he writes with his sensitive side at the forefront, then this book is for you. If author’s Fans love this book, and reviews will tell, we should see a book 3. I can only hope if that happens, author focuses on the strong Shelby character.

Great!!!

It started out slow but once the story started, it got better and better. I enjoyed the 1st book and i loved this one even more. There is always a secret within a secret and i find it thrilling. Based on the ending, I am expecting another book about Shelby. Hope there is one in the making and its not far along....

AMAZING!

A story that grabs you from the very beginning. Plenty of misdirection, side stories, great characters, many surprises and the ending! I loved the ending! A story that makes you smile, gasp in horror, root for all of the characters., secretly cheer when the miscreants get their "just desserts". What a ride!! Exceptional!

The ending!

I thought my review would be different as I skipped through some of the letters to her daughter. The drama was really thick in places and drolled on. January is a magnificent narrator though, she is what made me feel the end. I was ugly crying, which surprised me. But I guess as a mom and a nana the ending meant so much more.

WOW, just WOW!

This is my favorite Brian Freeman novel yet. I have listened to every one of them and they are all great but this one is now at the top of my list. I love that I never see the ending coming....in all his stories.

Great story, perfect narration.

I have listened to most of B. Freeman’s book and they were all great. However this title was a level higher than the others (I never thought it would be possible:)). The story draws you in from the beginning and keeps you wide awake until the end. And the ending…:) I will not reveal. I think the fact that I already feel like listening to the book again speaks for itself.

How could anybody have brought this fantastic story full circle like J Lavoy has! Brilliant. Very surprising and well written. Dynamic Duo.

Roller Coaster

This book has a very interesting if somewhat convoluted plot. A bit of suspension of belief is needed, but the author's excellent writing pulls it off. Brian does a great job getting into the mind of a woman here. I never saw the end coming. I could have used a bit less narration of the protagonist's letters to her daughter toward the end.
