Army veteran Lee Riker is staying in an Atlanta shelter and supporting himself with the odd carpentry job when his sister, Tara, summons him home to Indiana for the reading of their mother’s will. Riker boards a Greyhound bus in Atlanta with his duffel bag, less than $200 to his name, and a secret he must protect at all costs. Riker makes it to Middletown only to learn his sister has recently witnessed a gruesome death. Insisting she saw the victim rise from a pool of his own blood to attack the Samaritan rendering aid, Tara floats the idea that the man may have been a zombie.

It’s been a rough time for Gus Berry. He barely survived the city of Annapolis as its population underwent a violent transformation, leaving everyone he knew or loved either dead or undead. Things aren’t much better now, though. In fact, things might have become much worse. Living off the land, foraging for food, water, even medicine, and being able to adapt to a changing environment…it all takes a special individual, with an exceptional skill set and determination to survive. Gus Berry is not that individual.

It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Publisher's Summary
Chaos overtakes the fort when one of Howie’s group turns and starts killing survivors. Howie and his team are blamed and shunned but carry on their search for fuel to run generators in order to carry out research on the dog.
When Marcy realises the infection can cure diseases, and realising she can be strong and good, she decides to head to the fort to hand herself in to be examined, too. Howie is only partially convinced of her good intent, and, despite their hatred of one another, there is an undeniably strong connection between them.
Meanwhile, inmates inside a prison start killing each other, and Fletcher, an ex-power-lifter, is turned, becoming the most evil undead yet known.

Same old same old
This book did nothing for me that the previous six didn't. I didn't get to know the characters any better, I didn't get any grand insights into the backstory, and it doesn't seem like there's much to look forward to except more of the same. It was entertaining while it lasted, but I'll be looking for something else now

Another hit for the Undead series
Any additional comments?
There are some really bad people in this Part 7. This storyline includes the prison camp and the people who are housed within. Randall, the lead convict, is bad to the core of his evil being!! Haywood also reveals, again, that human nature can upset the applecart. Debbie (the police Sergeant) behaves in a mean spirited, selfish, spiteful and ungrateful manner that has far reaching consequences to the safety of the Fort. There are other characters who rise to the occasion and show that best that people can be. I continue to be impressed with Haywood's ability to create multi-layered characters - people you can love one minute and dislike the next. And Dan Morgan continues to bring them alive with his reading. Very talented reader!!

Addicting
I'm not a zombie fan. Haven't watched the walking dead. Not sure how I ended up with this series, but I'm hooked. I love the characters and the evolution of the story keeps it interesting. I used to love Dave, but know I love Reginald. Dan took a bit to get used to his narrative and in book 1 I initially thought it was going to be a bad read. But as I got used to his style I realized he was actually good. Part 1 he seemed breathy and paused in odd places. But he seems to have overcome that. Now I love his character voices. I'll hear "Yes, Mr. Howie in my head forever.
The only thing about the plot that keeps "bugging" me is why with all these decaying bodies insects such as Mosquitos haven't become an issue for spreading the virus? Also, the rat think kind of came and went. No long term affects there!
Some times the foul language gets to me but I realize it's the character and have been able to tolerate it.
I'm just waiting for day 18. I've gone through 3 volumes in a week. Definitely addicting.

A complete tragedy as the enemy has a victory.
Never have I come across two characters who I wish would die painfully. Randall is the monster who should have been killed for his use of "Motherf*cker" but no NEEDS to be put down.
Debbie is the despicable cow that earned her place in the harshest swamps of Inferno.
A dark story getting even darker, and I am glued to each chapter. Bests bests.

Love the series but awlful for the most part
What disappointed you about The Undead: Part 7?
The Randall and Reggie characters are ridiculous. I'm not buying the story line and arc of the Zombies. Zombies needing hydration, getting tired, scared, all this evolution in 12 days. all this in-fighting and everyone at the fort gets this stupid and letting their guard down in just 12 days... not buying it. the Zombie virus mutating and maturing the human bodies and functions in 12 days .. don't buy it. are they living or dead? Zombie super serum like Thor, I can go on and on. how can you heal a disease if you're dead??? seem like the authored got bored with this one and as good as the last chapter was this one was awful and not realistic. I still love the interaction of Howie, Dave, Clarence and the lads and now the dog and that's what's gotten me through, and the Larnie and Howie story was an awesome part of the story. and the Timeline is so off.
What could R. R. Haywood have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Put actual care and passion into this chapter. do more study in human interactions and feelings. Make the story more realistic. Take time off until he was really ready to start the next chapter. and the Author really wanted to make a new type of creature he should have started a completely different story with new characters and not called them Zombies.
What does Dan Morgan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Dan Morgan brings life to the characters. the only character I hated was Randall but it wasn't Dan's fault it was a poorly written character. Dan is an excellent story teller.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It seem like the Author let his inexperienced little brother write most of the book and took over at the end. He still has magic with Howie, Dave, Clarence and the team, & Larnie.. I still want to see how the story plays out,
Any additional comments?
I want to finish the series out, pissed off over this chapter, and the turn off the story but hoping the Author can regain the passion for the story and bring it back to where it was.

a great book with a dissapointing ending
this was one of my favorite undead books, however the ending was Soooo disappointing. I am not going to give anything away, but I just don't understand why we were left with a cliffhanger? I wanted closure. I listened to seven books and spent around a hundred dollars for this series so I was disappointed that the storyline did not give mm e closure but instead left me with questions and feeling like I missed something. ughh, I hate that!!! I almost gave the book 3 stars but besides the ending it was a great book.

Hate Americans much?
Really like the series but I have to say this guy R.R. Haywood really seems to dislike Americans. First the poser, pussy, douchebag Paco, now the thug Randall? Both Americans, the ONLY Americans in the story, both terrible people? Yep. Hates us all. Well R.R. Martin, I'm American and I love your books! But you may just be an American hating asshat! Please, if you read this review ( I doubt you will) feel free to contact me on Facebook. My name is David Madison, I live in Vermont USA. I'd love to have a chat about the different cultures.

Brilliant series all books are great!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Undead: Part 7 to be better than the print version?
I've listened to them all, not read any.
What did you like best about this story?
The way the main group communicate to one another the camaraderie is cleverly written and narrated. Being in Southen England I can relate to it as I live in London. Also as its done day by day, it can keep developing.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
So many hard to pick, I like the big confrontational fighting parts and then there relaxing banter after. It try's to show how they can come to terms with what is happening around them.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Laugh, a lot!
Any additional comments?

I am so enjoying this series. find myself laughing out loud to all the banter.
The story has me gripped and is fast paced but gutted about the fort.
would recommend this to anyone.

Great book
again another great book, don't you just love it when they axe a large number of characters (cue the evil laugh)

Not very convincing
Very entertaining though. Even with all women being caricatures of different stereotypes with differently sized boobs to tell them apart.

Unexpected
There was a lot of things that happened in the book that I really wasn't expecting. There was a few parts that were very dark and different to listen to and really wasn't expecting it to end so abruptly

Took a while but worth the wait
What a staggering development of character from this author and stern deployment of excellence from the narrator, waiting with baited breath on every development from this master piece, 10 out of 10,simply delious in every way. A must for the zombie fan. Watch this space for a movie.
