Dave finds an unconscious Howie and carries him into the residential streets for safety. The others have been separated and are searching for each other. Nick falls asleep and misses the pick up.

We meet Lilly and Billy, a brother and sister who are led by their ineffectual father into a series of devastating situations which results in Billy being taken by two men and Lilly witnessing the murder of her father. Lilly tracks her brother and meets up with Nick who, not being able to find his group, agrees to help her.

Nick finds Billy has been taken to a stately home taken over by a doctor who claims to be working on a cure. Meanwhile, Howie, who has learned he is immune, and his group are heading back to the fort when they become trapped in a safari park.

…with every new chapter then book in this chronicle of Howie, Dave, their troops made new a family, Meredith, and all the other tangible personalities against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic event amerces you right along in the nonstop adventure, chaos, cut wrenching heartbreak balanced precariously with snort escaping humor as the narrator melds more-and-more into the characters with each next book/part. I love the unique concept of the virus being a distinct entity ruling, continuously evolving and directing the endless throngs of zombies in the never ending siege against the living hosts in which it only objective is to kill Howie and all those who stand with him. Simply put *STANDING OVATION*

Amazingly, it just keeps getting better…

nothing really happens in this book. a few of the other groups just seem to plod on for far too long before anything happens. hopefully the next book is better

great series but this book is my least favorite

RR Haywood is a masterful writer!! The character development, the story line, the way its all tied together is absolutely delightful. You end up being emotionally invested in almost all of the characters. Im just now starting Book 10. What a fun ride!!

Simply Amazing

This chapter was rich with characters, events and emotions. Haywood knows how to direct the scenes. Dialogue, scenery, action all working together. No video necessary! Nick's journey with the rapist and meeting Lilly is complex yet clearly enacted. Dan Morgan shines as the narrator.

SPOILER coming....

My only gripe is WHY did Nick drop his pistol when he first saw Lily running towards him?
-Nick is escorting a rapist and protecting a child (Todd) when he sees three unknown people approaching him and decides he should drop his only weapon for the sake of an unknown girl? How pretty can a screaming girl be???
-Nick kept channeling 'what would Dave do?' at every step. The LAST thing Dave would do is abandon his only weapon.

Since this is a review and not a discussion I can only say the pistol drop was either a baffling choice by Nick or an insult to the reader by Haywood. Ultimately Nick retrieved his pistol and took care of business but I thought that didn't make any stranger-danger sense.

Amazing writing
