Yet despite their differences, great managers share one common trait: They don’t hesitate to break virtually every rule held sacred by conventional wisdom. They don’t believe that, with enough training, a person can achieve anything he sets his mind to. They don’t try to help people overcome their weaknesses. And, yes, they even play favorites. In this longtime management bestseller, Gallup presents the remarkable findings of its massive in-depth study of great managers.

Stephen M.R. Covey has made it his life’s work to understand trust in leadership and organizations. In his newest and most transformative book, Trust and Inspire, he offers a simple yet bold solution: to shift from this “command and control” model to a leadership style of “trust and inspire.” People don’t want to be managed; they want to be led. Trust and Inspire is a new way of leading that starts with the belief that people are creative, collaborative, and full of potential.

We've seen the negative impact of self-serving leaders in every sector of our society. Not infrequently, they end up bringing down their entire organization. But there is another way. Servant leaders lead by serving their people, not by exalting themselves. In this collection, edited by legendary business author and lifelong servant leader Ken Blanchard and his longtime editor Renee Broadwell, leading businesspeople, best-selling authors, and spiritual leaders offer tools for implementing this proven - but for some, still radical - leadership model.

Stephen R. Covey believed there were only two ways to live: a life of primary greatness or a life of secondary greatness. Through his classic books and seminars, he taught that the intrinsic rewards of primary greatness - integrity, responsibility, and meaningful contribution - far outweighed the superficial rewards of secondary greatness - money, popularity, and the self-absorbed, pleasure-ridden life that some people consider "success".

How do we as individuals and organizations survive amid tremendous change? Why are efforts to improve falling so short in real results, despite the millions of dollars in time, capital, and human effort being spent? How do we unleash creativity, talent, and energy in the midst of pressure? Is it realistic to believe that balance among personal, family, and professional life is possible? Stephen R. Covey demonstrates that the answer to these and other dilemmas is Principle-Centered Leadership, a long-term, inside-out approach to developing people and organizations.

Leadership isn't easy. It takes grit, courage, and vision, among other things, that can be hard to come by on your toughest days. When leaders and aspiring leaders seek out advice, they're often told to try harder. Dig deeper. Look in the mirror and own your natural-born strengths and fix any real or perceived career-limiting deficiencies. Frances Frei and Anne Morriss offer a different worldview. They argue that this popular leadership advice glosses over the most important thing you do as a leader: build others up. Leadership isn't about you.

A Wellspring of Ethics and Leadership Insights
Frank Bucaro, one of the leading lights in business and organizational ethics, has recently published a new audio book, entitled THE TRUST PUZZLE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR COMPANY ON THE ETHICAL HIGH ROAD. Bucaro has been working for 30 years with corporate leaders in developing values-based leadership programs and presenting workshops and learning sessions for professionals, focused on creating, enhancing and sustaining ethical culture and ethical business practices in organizations.
Bucaro comes at this from the world of teaching – and the teaching of moral theology. His scope of knowledge ranges from ancient sources to contemporary literature, and he is a Renaissance Man to be sure. At the same time, his style is open, thought-provoking, and questioning. He does not present himself as an answer man, but rather as a colleague trying to offer awareness and ask his peers to question their thought processes as well as actions, all with the goal of making organizations both accountable and profitable. We need more Frank Bucaros in the business and organizational world as well as in government, academia and the non-profit sector.
THE TRUST PUZZLE - a wellspring of ethics and leadership insights - is divided into six main sections, but one of its virtues – and a key underlying asset of the entire book – is that the sections often overlap in content while looking at that content from different perspectives: reputation, trust and loyalty, moral compass, accountability, stewardship, and implementation. Thus, the book can be heard in its entirety, or in sections, in order or out of order – without sacrificing its value. For training and learning purposes alone, that is important.
Beyond that, because of the generality and breath of its scope, it can apply to any type of organization, regardless of the nature of the product or service, or whether it is a for profit or non-profit entity. This enables the discussions and solutions to “the Puzzle” to be adapted to the particulars of the company or other entity.
There is also much wisdom in this book, culled both from Bucaro’s knowledge and experience; and many excellent questions raised to stimulate and provoke discussion, enlightenment, and action designed to help make an organization better as a workplace - and as a place to improve the world. Many practical tips and suggestions to do so are contained within the book.
Here are just some of the key takeaways:
• Morale filters down.
• Employees listen with their eyes as much if not more than with their ears.
• Leadership requires continual evaluation by leaders to make sure they are in touch with what is going on in an
organization and acting to continually respond to developments and improve the entity.
• True values-based leadership requires a commitment to service, a sense of humility and self-awareness of one’s own
limitations, and gratitude for the opportunity to serve as well as succeed.
• The meaning of work is closely tied to education.
• Business is not an island unto itself simply designed for financial profit, but a critical player in making society better for
everyone through its products and services.
• Organizations have consciences – or should – just as individuals do; and just as a person has a “True North” based on
a moral compass, so should an entity.
• What is legal is not necessarily ethical.
• Compliance is important and ethics is important, and they overlap, but they are not the same.
• Codes of conduct are different from codes of ethics and an organization needs both.
• Ethics codes need to be re-visited and updated at least every three years to remain fresh and vibrant, and the input of
all employee levels is essential to the success of this effort [As one who headed a corporate ethics program for 20
years in which we revised and updated our ethics code every year with input from every level of the company, I am
especially sensitive to the importance of this insight.].
• The ethical essence of an individual – whether a leader or other team member – is the difference between making a
living and making a life.
Perhaps the two things that are most important about Bucaro’s approach to the subject are:
• He shows the relationship of the internal to the external – Through discussions of matters like conscience and
stewardship, he demonstrates how internal processes within an individual’s mind can be exemplified – for good
or bad – through actions that have consequences in the real world.
• He shows the relationship of ethics to leadership – Through discussions of matters like reputation, trust and values, he
demonstrates the difference between servant leadership that actually moves an organization forward, and purported
leadership that allows for lower level employees to be blamed and disciplined for the consequences of unethical
policies that flow from the top, while senior management is insulated, destroying morale and having long-term adverse
effects on the operation. Just check the newspaper any day to see the truth of this point.
In sum, THE TRUST PUZZLE is an excellent investment for leaders of any type of entity – and for their team members as well. It may well help you better understand the many dimensions of this puzzle and solve it for your own organization so that yours will be – or stay – on the ethical high road, and profit in every way from that journey.
